Re: Heat Gun

JayL,

Makita is a very good brand, notwithstanding it being made in China. You would be hardpressed to find any product nowadays that's not made in China or Taiwan. Just stick to the well known brands and you won't have any problem.

The choice of heat gun depends on your intended use. The basic one usually has 2 heat settings - low (250 deg C or higher) and high (450 deg C or higher). For DIY use I would say that this is enough. And then there are some with a multitude of features, like variable heat settings, digital temp. readouts, etc.

Cost out a kit with nozzle attachments included compared to just a heat gun and then buying attachments separately. For paint stripping, you will definitely need a flat nozzle to spread the heat.

By the way, how do you repair car headlights?

Re: Heat Gun

Thanks for your reply.

If the available Makita here has nozzle attachments available then I would go for it. I am sure the 1,850 quoted did not include these nozzles.

I had my car headlights repaired but was not satisfied with the job. I saw how it was done and some improvements can be made, hence my need for a heat gun to work on it.

Re: Heat Gun

you can also try Black & Decker KX2000 around P2700.00 and CD701 P2200.00, mall price.

if you have time to go to t. alonzo st in sta cruz manila you can still haggle the price by 10-20% lower.

B&D products carries 2 years warranty on parts and service which is very important specially for heat guns which the heating element easily gets busted.

Re: Heat Gun

for repairing car head/tail lights, you can opt to use a hair dryer set on high heat instead of a heat gun. it'll take a little longer, but it works as well. You can help the process along by using a small-sized awl or a similar tool to push out the silicone gaskets while it is being heated. I also read somewhere that some people have successfully separated the lenses from their car lights from the housings by popping them in preheated ovens and baking them for a short while (i assume on some sort of non-stick baking tray). HTH.
