Hello everyone!

I am looking for a school/ training area that offers handyman courses/programs in the GMM region more specifically Makati. I've heard of Don Bosco but they are currently on summer break and no one is answering the phone! I would greatly appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction.

Please feel free to use this thread to share where you have gotten you training as handymen, formal or not. 🙂

Re: Handyman business

Hi Timber,

I want to have a general overview of the whole handyman business. Basically my end goal is to be able to become a legitimate, all-purpose handyman that is knowledgeable about (almost) everything inside a household. basic carpentry, wire installation, plumbing and pool repair, etc.

I can teach you woodworking or carpentry two hours a day if you want, but I cannot teach you everything handyman. and as far as I'm aware there isn't a school that teaches an all purpose handyman.
I learned from reading online and practicing by myself and trying what I find best...

Re: Handyman business

Does the TLRC still operate? It's that inverted pyramid building along northbound service road of SLEX. I recall they offered various vocational courses. May be good to check it out.

Re: Handyman business

our local PMTC (provincial manpower and training center) in nueva ecija does not include carpentry and woodworking as choiced subjects but rather focused on welding (basic) and household/building/automotive electricals.

maybe we could set up a vocational school dedicated to woodworking...we could invite lecturers for some "sub specialty" of this field like turning, intarsia and marquetry for example.

ang school principal si timber! :p

big things usually start from scratch.

so lets hone our skills for this endeavor then!

Re: Handyman business

😀 I had to google intarsia and marquetry

Marquetry, I learned after all, is what I plan to do on the coachroof of the boat I'm building. Planning to do a compass rose inlay.

Re: Handyman business

Thank you guys,

I checked out TLRC and they do not offer any courses that would really give an extensive background on handyman duties. (they offer food packaging, paper recycling, reflexology, etc.) 🙁

Thank you also, Timber, for offering to teach me woodworking but I am leaning towards being also able to fix household appliances (ref, pool, aircon, etc.). Thus, I am really looking for a place where they would offer overall training.

Haaaay, I tried TESDA as well but the schools they referred me to no longer exist/ offer those courses. 🙁

IMHO I don't think there is / are school or private training institution giving several courses for becoming a handyman. Skills shown by handymen are acquire through years of actual experience and self schooling or research. Maybe you can check out TESDA training centers all over the country, its a goverment outfit giving short courses for interested individuals wanting to learn some skills. :p

At TESDA they offer dressmaking, housekeeping, soap making, chocolate candy making, automotive, welding, reflexology, cosmetology, baking, ship engine mechanics, handycrafts making and and many more.

Now being a legitimate all purpose handyman knowledgeable in almost anything inside a household,,,,,,,,,, well I guess you have to be an apprentice first to carpenters, plumbers, electricians, contractors, auto mechanics machinist, welders, house painters, kanteros and masons etc etc etc. Watching them and working with these people you acquire different skills and knowledge and it will take a lot of patience and many years of trials and errors.:rolleyes:
