I've been lurking PHM for some time and now it's time to introduce myself. I'm a handyman from Quezon City who gets excited with electrical, automotive, carpentry, plumbing, and everything else that excites MacGyver. My kid calls me Handy Manny (her favorite show at one point). When I was young, my sisters and my dad gave me tools, tool boxes, or consumables like electric tape and wire ties for Christmas. My then girlfriend (now my wife) gave me a Maglite set on my birthday.

Since my grade 2 boy scout days, I've always carried some form of pocket knife (very small 'harmless' folding knife in elementary, swiss army knife in high school, college, and work, then until recently multi-tools like Leathermans) on me except when I'm on a plane or when our school gets strict about bringing knives to schools. Usually my teachers don't mind me bringing a swiss knife to school because I'm the peaceful kind. 🙂 Now I'm 35 years old and I carry a Leatherman Juice s2 and small backup like a Leatherman Squirt or Victorinox Classic. There never comes a day that I wouldn't use any of my swiss knives or multi-tools (well maybe 9 out of 10 days I use them).

I'm an industrial engineer (management engineer as some may call it) but I never really got to practice hard engineering as most of my work involves people and not machines. Now I'm working on a big project and I'm surrounded by computer, electrical, and communications engineers who are making homegrown custom computers and wired and wireless network components. But I'm still working with people -- I'm just surrounded by engineers.

I don't have a dedicated workshop at home. I just work where it is safe and comfortable for me to work. I have a small collection of miscellaneous tools which are actually my dad's. The oldest tool I am using is a screwdriver that my dad bought years before I was born. I also have a hammer and a chisel set that are about my age. The oldest power tool here is a Makita single-speed drill which is still working almost perfectly despite the fact that it is 34 years old. I had my own soldering iron when I was in grade 2. My newest power tool is a Dremel which bought a couple of weeks ago. I also got a Skil cordless set (drill, jigsaw, and sander) a couple of months ago for 3,000 pesos (After trading in an old broken cordless B&D small screwdriver).

Looking at my profile I just realized that I've been a member of PHM since 2010 but I never got to be active in the forums. Researching on Dremel bits in the past weeks brought me back here.

Anyway, with all those tools you got from your dad, use them properly, take good care of them as well as the tools you are purchasing at the present and someday, someday, time will come when it will be your turn to be handling them naman over to your son/s. Re: Hello world!

I think the Makita already needs a bushing or bearing replacement.

To give you an idea of what I usually build, let me try to enumerate what I built in the past couple of weeks. I make mostly small things. This afternoon, I made a baking soda plus vinegar volcano with my daughter. I also made a rubber ducky antenna for our car because the antenna was stolen last week. A couple of weeks ago, I made a tripod mount for my cellphone out of PVC pipes. When my daughter had a homework about balance weighing scales, I made her a balance using coroplast. Last month, I made an infrared stylus for an interactive whiteboard that I was helping design using an old whiteboard marker body and a few pesos worth of parts. When I saw that I had some scrap plywood lying around, I made alligator clip extra hands a couple of weeks ago. A day after I built the extra hands, I was able to use it because I needed to do some electrical soldering repair (had to solder wires to a new aircon compressor capacitor).
