Novice DIY-er lang ako, but I wrote an article about how DIY may or may not be a frugal choice. Kung pwede lang po, puntahan niyo sana yung article and give your expert ideas kung sa experience nyo ay napamura or napamahal pa kayo sa pay DIY. Thanks! (click here to visit the article and share yoru thoughts)

Looking forward to doing more! ;D

Re: Newbie Needs Your Opinion

nice article from a very interesting site!!

TIME. If i have this a lot, i would like to DIYs hundred of things coz aside from continuous learning, the "satisfaction" is different if you accomplished something.

My experience? I think I saved a lot from smaller projects that required few hours to do.

Re: Newbie Needs Your Opinion

It really depends on the kind of DIYer you are. DIY I believe was coined by those actually wanting to save such as yourself. I myself am into doing things myself because I like it, just as manggyver said. I suppose the better term for me is "hobbyist" or "amateur" or "enthusiast". I like saving too but I have to be honest and admit that I'm pretty sure I've spent more than if I'd have bought all the things I've made or tried to make.

If you are only out to save then stick to simple things that do not require a good amount of practice and just need you to find and absorb knowhow to accomplish the task. It is another matter all together if you get into things that require practice. This is the reason why craftsmen are paid a good wage. A person could make do with the skills he has but quality will surely be less than par, and mistakes will be costly, if not dangerous (safety first). One should not worry though, skills can be developed however paying the "tuition" is unavoidable. Now, tuition need not be expensive. Just invest some time for practice, and practice on scraps, start with "student" tools.

Happy DIYing.

Re: Newbie Needs Your Opinion

Kasi, kung ikukumpara ko how much I earn per hour vs. how much I can pay for something ready-made or for a craftsman, mas makakatipid ako kung magpapagawa ako sa iba.

Ang fulfilling lang kasi nung feeling na may nagawa ka with your own hands, na hindi mukhang galing sa factory. Pero dahil first time ko pa lang, I work with found objects and scrap wood.

And I agree with you lncc63 🙂 Parang tuition na nga yung pagiinvest mo ng time, materials, and effort sa pag-DIY 🙂 In time, sana magaling na ako.

Re: Newbie Needs Your Opinion

Go for it then frugalpinoy. Only the uninitiated have no claim to hope, of which are not one of them.

I've been asked on occasion how much it would cost to use my workshop. I always reply "I don't know and I don't want to know".

How is this for a DIY:

Most of it we made ourselves including the sails and the trailer (not shown). Even our kids pitched in. If you, or anyone else, are interested in boats, come visit the Philippine Home Boatbuilder's Yacht Club.

Preferably a small dinghy or a canoe. Thanks for sharing the link to your site!

Re: Newbie Needs Your Opinion

Club Manila East in Taytay has kayaks but I don't know if they give lessons. It is most like though.

If you want FREE "lessons", find out on the PHBYC board when I or maybe some of the other members will be at Taal, we'd be glad to give you some. Our group's members have several boats at Taal that can be used by newcomers, you have to get permission though. Please note the quotations marks around the word "lessons", they are there because these are informal lessons at best.
