All About Metal Bender thread.
kindly post your builds, question (if any) regarding the tool. Enjoy!

the poorman's metal bender WIP started at thread #198 at Welding Newbie under Metalworking Forum.

then the poorman's metal bender measurements at thread #276.

as you go along, you can find the improved version made by PHM Grandfather of Metalworking, none other than JayL ... and improved version of grandmaster Ryobi... :massbounce:

enjoy!

@jay,
i cut my 13mm drill bit because of the chipped portion on the edge.

and now ready for the drilling action on my bender's jig to your Drill Press 😀

Re: All About Metal Bender

Hehehehehe . I have some ongoing bids in ebay for a Drill Doctor 500x but the more I think about the 350X you showed me the more I think that simpler is better. If I don't win the 500X I'll order a 350X instead.

Good job on the 13mm bit. Mechanics Lenght na ngayon yan , mas sturdy.

Re: All About Metal Bender

@ossie

I decided to give the Bender bench vise removable attachment another thought. I shelved the original design we made in favor of a shift in the center of gravity with respect to the vise and bender.

Thus I purchased new metal. A larger 1/2" thick 7" x 9" plate and a 3/8" thick 3" x 3" angle bar.

Here's the prototype. Please let me know if you guys have some suggestions or recommendations before I start fabrication of the bolting system and the welding.

My main concern is the safety of the Wilton 6" bench vise and that it would take the pressure needed sustain the bending jig. None the less it is rated at 70,000 psi whatever that means.

As with the original design the bender can either sit on the bench vise attachment or bolted to a welding table instead.

Re: All About Metal Bender

Additional support for the angle bar sides will be added during the actual fabrication.

Re: All About Metal Bender

Don't you think it's better to use 1/2" 4" x 4" thick angle bar? Compact steel didn't have it on stock but I can check another supplier.

Re: All About Metal Bender

I don't have clearance to put the supports inside the angle bar but can place it at the ends. The plate is only 9" wide and the bench jaws are 6" wide already. Consider the also the 2 bolts at each end of the plate to attach it to the bender bench vise holder.

How about going 1/2" angle bar instead of 3/8"? However with the support you drew then maybe 3/8" angle bar will be fine.

I'm with the idea that a 1/2" angle bar will not need any additional supports.

Re: All About Metal Bender

@jay,
the picture was drawn based on the measurement you mentioned below.
the angle bar you have is good coz its thick. maybe we can think of something else if the suggestion is not feasible hehehe

The supports is a good idea. I just have to move these to the edges of the angle bar.I reckon no need to get 1/2" angle bar because 3/8" will be sturdy when supported.

Something like this but will cut it in triangle shape. The slight protrusion up will also make the bender plate easier to align to the vise holder.

I'll go get 3/8" thick 3" flat bar so it will be exact. The one on the pic is only 2 1/2" wide.
