For the rods go with scrap automotive suspension rack ends. These are fully heat treated and hardened metals. Trust me even stainless or tool steel will take a beating once you start bending 1/4" flat bars on the bender.

No need to buy new. Most auto repair shops will have a few defective ones from repaired vehicles. Look for Lancer rack ends. That's the one I used.
IIRC I had posted some pic of this auto suspension part somewhere on this thread.
