Re: Chop Saw Stand

Been a bit busy but managed to cut the square tubes for the bases.

13" x 22"
22" x 22"

I wanted 24" x 22" for more stability but decided against it in favor of a smaller foot print. Of course this stand should support long pieces for cutting and should be strong enough not to tumble.

Re: Chop Saw Stand

I seldom draw plans for my wips unless I intend to have somebody else build it. However I like to do mock ups or dry fits whenever I'm to make an important descison. In this case the height of the stand.

This is how I will position the chop saws.

Happy with the dimensions I make it final and cut 2 temporary legs while I install the 4 angled legs.
Tack welded the temporary legs making sure everything is aligned properly.

Bottom Frame size = 22" x 22"
Top Frame = 22" x 13"
Caster OA height = 3"
Chop saw stand top base height = 33"
Makita Dry cut saw table height = 3"
Total height of dry cut saw table to ground = 36"

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Now for the angled legs. There are two ways to do this. Since both the lower and upper bases are already in place temporarily ... I can just get actual measurements of the leg.

However since the wip dimensions are up to specs within 1/16" tolerance I prefer to use the Pythagorean Theorem to easily get the angled legs' length and angle .

http://www.1728.org/pythgorn.htm

Two sides of the triangle are available ... Side 1 = 4.5" and Side 2 = 26.5".

The resulting Hypotenuse is the leg length = 26.879" and angle = 9.6375 degrees.
Converted inches to metric and proceeded to cut the legs using a stop block for repeated cuts.

checked that the dry cut saw made the correct angle cut

Re: Chop Saw Stand

legs install

Tack welded all the legs .. I mean full tack welds ... we don't want any distortion during full welding of the legs or all bets would be off and I'll be back to square 1.

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Preparing to full weld

Will grind the tack welds a bit using a 60 grit flap disc on low speed then proceed to full weld

I don't weld in a single run ... I break it down into two runs to minimize distortion. Anyway all these will be grind ed flush.
Don't be fooled by those mig like tig welds seen in American forums. Those guys use 3mm tubes while usually we use 1.5mm undersized pa. If I want to get similar welds then I will need two passes to minimize burn through.

The hard part is done ... from here on it will be a fun build.

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Thank you very much bros. Will post developments.

Your advises and comments will be very valuable. It is important for me that all flaws in the wip be pointed out before final welding is done.

@Ossie ... glad you logged in. Ikaw pa naman mahilig punta lagi dito sa shop dati. Hope all is well.

Very nice development Sir Jay, ,,, did you keep the original measurement or down size it as you have mentioned yesterday to me in your shop?

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Jovie ... I increased the height by 1 inches and kept the frame dimensions as is. As you suggested I kept the legs angle not more than 10 degrees.

Re: Chop Saw Stand

When it comes to distortion .... to trust is good but to not trust is better thus I supported and clamped the wip well before welding the inside part of the legs install.

Welded the insides ... itong mga corner welds and malakas sa distortion thus manipis lang banat pero single run

I don't get excited easily after welding anymore thus I'm wiser enough to let the wip cool down well before removing my clamps ... LOL
