Re: Chop Saw Stand

The Lazy Susan portion ..... 1/4" plate top 14" x 19" with a center bow of 1/4". Next time I buy plates I'm going to the store and cut these myself ... the staff doing the cutting does not care how expensive it is to straighten their work out. Grrrrr

I need to spring this back to a reasonable flatness ... I chose to fire up the torch.

I don't have a rosebud heating attachment yet thus will use the cutting tip to do the wip section by section ... I mark the reference lines ...

Heat to expand then quench with water to contract the metal abruptly

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Now this is better .... welded 3/16" flat bars to the bottom to raise the plate up .... plates are very strong when bowed ... if I did not compensate it will just bend the flat bars with it albeit minimizing the bow.

dry fit ....

Calculated the pivot point location ...

the proceeded to drill the pivot holes ...

Re: Chop Saw Stand

I just want a simple mechanism to turn the top plate when chopping 45 degree miters ... so that I can still use the extensions and it's stop blocks. A SCMS will not need such setup because the saw's table itself rotates.

nothing simpler than a bolt ...

next I need to bolt the saw to the top plate ... transfer punches makes life easier

then on to the drill press ... 11/32" drill bit ... the dry cut saw requires all in all 3 bolts to fix it to the plate

Then I proceeded to tap the holes metric fine 10 x 1.25 mm

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Cutting fluid makes a lot of difference when tapping compared to just using something like wd40 ... usually I prefer cutting fluid when using mid range quality taps

This Jap made tap did well ... but still light years away from Norseman tap performance

I will bolt the top plate to the base ... spring assisted tightening so I can friction lock thus no tool is required to swivel position it.

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Bro JayL,

So there is an amount of space or gap between the receiver and the extendable tubing, say about 1/4" or 3/16" of an inch, if I were to line up a flat bar of about 1/8" or 3/16" thick to compensate for the gap, I'd rather place it on the outside two surfaces of the extendable tubing rather than the insides of the receiver. One on the underside and another on the left or right side.
You can easily clamp the flat bars and correct any mistakes, do some adjustments, then can easily apply Mig welds on the edges probably by stitch welding or spot welds to prevent some possible warping, then grind or shape and polish/buff excess welds. 😉

Bro if you will apply it inside the receiver tubing, ma we welding mo lang ang mga dulo ng flatbar at edge ng tubing. 🙁

Bro thank you very much for your feedback. That is a solution too.

None the less I now prefer tighter tolerance receiver tubes so I've decided to build these ... I will use 1/8" plate

Re: Chop Saw Stand

I suggest you use a wing-nut so you don't have to use a wrench to tighten. I'm not sure if its that tight as you require on your swivel.

Yes Voltaire ... a good idea. It's better to have it there in case I need to re tighten ... saves time grabbing a wrench. 🙂

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Receiver Tubes ... I'm so disappointed that such a simple item is not available in the local metal stores ...

The blades drawer ... I need more blades ... and a drawer knob LOL

Metabo cordless circular saw ... blade reload from wood to metal

Cutting 1/8" plates is not so easy even for a Diablo steel demon ... I need to save on the blade consumption

I'm reverting the plan back to using existing 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square tubes with spacers rather than build from scratch .... anyway the spacers provide the needed tolerance

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Yes I remember ... you could probably use the same 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1.5 mm square tubes ... reinforced with 1 1/4" x 3/16 inch flat bars or thicker depending on the load.

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Re: Chop Saw Stand

All the while I thought it was the Diablo blade that was slowing me down. I now think the cordless Metabo CS has something to do with it. While it works perfect for up to 14 gauge plates ( Metabo CS ) the Diablo blade performed better with a 13A CS cutting 1/8" plates ... the max thickness the blade can handle.

ready for welding

Re: Chop Saw Stand

Now for the extension locking bolts

if you're into metal working then keep old replaced vehicle parts ... good source for project materials

i just need the rod
