So sorry guys, I have to set aside work on the Heavy duty welding table for a while since I have to do an emergency DIY repair or metal fabrication on my son's computer chair which broke down just last night, some sort of plastic construction defect, the wheel base just cracked and dislodge from the main hydraulic tubing and good thing nobody got hurt while using the chair.

Bought this chair from SM last January and assembled it myself for his X-MAS gift, actually its an executive reclining chair, just perfect for his stocky build/body frame. Its useless to repair it by glueing the pieces so I decided to just fabricate the wheel base by using 1/4" or 3/8" thick flat bars and plate or maybe some stainless steel so there will be no more painting of the finished DIY project.

Here are some pics of the broken wheel base that I intend to fabricate :

There must have been a flaw or defect in the moulding and use of the plastic that it was not sturdy enough to carry a 250 lbs weight of a 6 footer+ individual.

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

I was able to remove the whole assembly from the main hydraulic stand and started studying the possible construction of this wheel base, really is useless to repair this wheel base so its gonna be fabrication time. Ok I'll just update you on the progress of this project or maybe the final result of the wheel base what ever material I decide to use, whether stainless steel or ordinary MS iron/steel. Hmmm, sigh, a Tig welder is just perfect for this kind of project, well I guess I'll just contend with my Stick welder and angle grinders.

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

Scary how those cheap stuff can be. SM and the distributor profit+overhead probably comprise -what?- 40% to 60% of the cost to the end user?

I was using a cheap pc chair before, i could already feel the metal through the thin cushion and i was thinking: What are the odds of dying by being sodomized by the gas cylinder like this dude?

owyn<---- on the lookout for a good chair but didn't get the discounted executive chair sold at SM.

Buy the ones with metal base. Lots of these swivel chairs sold as surplus in Evangelista St in Makati.

Hey, that happened to me! But, no I have neither been sodomized nor castrated.

I was using a cheap stool for playing my keyboard. The column suddenly shot through the seat and ended up protruding just in front of my most valuable body part.

In a fit of rage, I threw the thing away. In hindsight, I should have cannibalized the base and rollers.

HERE'S AN UPDATE OF WHAT I HAVE BEEN DOING LATELY, WORKING ON THE METAL FAB OF MY SON'S COMPUTER CHAIR.

Made a graphic illustration on oslo paper of what I intend to do so I can have an easy guide if ever there will be any or some corrections to be done and correctly follow each dimensions and materials to use. :banana2:

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

Already gathered my materials, bought a piece of 3/8" thick ms plate, then got my excess 2" GI pipe and also my excess 1 1/2" GI pipes, also bought a scrap 2 x 2 x 3/16 inch flat bar.

I started cleaning the ms plate, de-rusting and applying a rust converter after which when completely dry, wiped it with kerosene to remove the Turco solution residue, then started measuring the size I intend to use. Started cutting and grinding edges patiently to achieve a ten sided metal base.

This is how thick the ms plate I am going to use. I guess this wheel base metal fab will out live the computer chair itself and also thinking I may be doing an over kill in this fab with the kind of materials I am using, well let's see as I progress.

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

Very nice draft. I envy those people who can sketch like this. I miss my drafting days!

BTT, wouldn't it be better if the short vertical tubes will be the one to be grinded into shape? I know it's cheaper to find a surplus chair but I guess these projects is what tingles someone's butt and makes it priceless 😀

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

After working with the ms plate, I started working on the center pipe, got the scrap 2" GI pipe, measured to the desired length, marked it and started cutting with only an angle grinder since it is only one piece.

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

But when I started cutting more than one of the same size of pipe I already used a chop saw together with cutting the 5 pieces of 2 x 2 flat bars, just to hasten the cutting time.

Made a sample cut in one of the flat bars and see how it will fit the base plate.

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

Usually when we cut metals or pipes for that matter using a chop saw with an abrasive cutting wheel, this is what we get, lots of burrs or excess sharp metal that can be dangerous and can hurt us.

So I started grinding the edges of the pipes but to make it easy to grind the pipes, I placed it on my pipe support angle bar and would just rotate the pipes with my left fingers clockwise or counter clockwise with great ease.

This very simple angle bar project has really become very useful for me and also very versatile too.

TO BE CONTINUED and thanks for viewing !!!!

@jarod,

I did not see this reply earlier bro jarod, but with regards to the short vertical tube to be grinded and shaped, I think you are right, these short tubes, I do not know how you will call them but these tubes will be the ones carrying the five arms welded to the main pipe and the flat bars which are also welded to the base plate.

Very sharp observation bro, thanks, though I have not made some cuts yet on the short GI pipings. :thanks: 😉

Re: DIY Computer Chair wheel base metal fab

After completion of attaching the shaped plate strips onto the base plate, I started working on the GI tubes grinding one end to fit the main 2" GI pipe in the center. But before attaching the main pipe to the plate I worked on the three bolt nuts to be welded to the upper part of the main pipe that will serve as lock for the cylinder to be inserted inside.

Drilled three holes about 1/4" in diameter then welded the nuts to the main pipe.

Then started positioning the 1 1/2" GI pipes and applying tack on top, sides and under sides.
