As I was making the rounds of the several junk shops in our vicinity and the next town a few weeks ago looking for scrap stainless steel cuttings, I chanced upon these old small tire rims about 11" in diameter in one of the junk shops I visited, decided to buy two pieces for 50 peses each, thought these might be useful in the future.

While doing some WIP projects for the " stick welding on thin sheet metal ", I decided to make a free standing welding positioner using one of the small rim and some flat iron bars to ease my movement while welding. The welding positioner will give me an 18" in diameter where I can clamp the metal project and weld with ease. Everything that I will use in this positioner will be from scrap metals sourced out from a junk shop near us. :gun:

These are the initial materials for this project., a small tire rim, about 11" in diameter and 4 pieces of 3/16" X 3" X 5" flat iron bars. Drilled some 13mm holes on each flat bar where I can attach my welding clamps.

The 4 flat bars were welded around the rim giving me an 18" diameter working surface.

Another image of the welded tire rim and flat bars.

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

On the following images I'll be showing close-ups of how I welded the flat iron bars onto the rim using different technique in weld application. I have marked each flat bar for easy identification for each weld application :

For the flat bars A & B, I used the push and pull technique of welding using a 6013 rod from Nihonweld. THE weld puddles came out very decent and like a TIG application.

And on the flat bars number 1 & 2, I used a continues letter C weld applications which also came out very decent.

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

The images here that I will be showing will be the back side welding of the rim and flat bars.

I showed only two images of the reverse side since the other welds of the flat bars are just the same.

These are the welding and vise clamps that I will be using for this welding positioner.

TO BE CONTINUED, 😉

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

is it going to be like a rotating clamping table bro?

those clamps are nice...

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

HI there V,

Yes V, its gonna be a rotating clamping positioner that can also be tilted to 45 up to 90 degrees. It can also be placed on top of a welding table or be mounted on its own stand which I will also fabricate and study the rotating and tilting mechanism. :p

Though this welding positioner is very much going to be different from the welding positioner that I will be attaching to my welding table, it will still very useful on or out of its free stand.
I can even raise it above up to 6 feet so that I can practice my overhead vertical, horizontal and underside position, ( 2G, 3G & 4G / 2F, 3F & 4F ) of welding metals. 😉 🙂

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

Bro Rosy ... your practice in thin sheets manifested itself already in thicker metal stick welding ... tubo ka na bro sa time and materials invested sa PIPs mo. 🙂

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

Bro JayL,

YES, yes bro I know, I've gained such great confidence in stick welding compared to my weld applications years ago, that PIPs on thin sheet metal was such a great help, he he he he he would you believe now I am teaching my friend who graduated from TESDA with NC 1 and NC 2 certificates and a certified licensed welder now how to weld on thin sheet metals, WOW parang nagka baligtad pa, ako pa nag tuturo ngayon sa kanya and he is supposed to be the one teaching me. LOL 😀

The PIPs really boosted my confidence since if I can weld properly and effectively on thin sheets, then what more on thicker metals, now my focus is to learn all the different welding positions that is why this project suddenly popped up. This is also the reason why my WIPs for the Stick Welding on thin sheets got so delayed and derailed because while working on them suddenly this idea started to manifest and while in the middle of the thin sheet metal project, just dropped everything and started working on this welding positioner, para bang biglang preno tapos biglang kumambyo for a new welding project. :p 😉 🙂

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

OK, to continue with the welding wip, I have again some pics to show :

With these four pics, I'm just showing how the clamps will be attached and utilized though I don't have yet the right stand for it. Still in search for a 3" GI pipes and some 2" X 4" tubulars or some thick angle iron bars as its base and maybe some rubber wheel casters.

Re: DIY Free Standing WELDING POSITIONER

Last two pics to show, I am already using it even though it has no stand yet, the head itself is very useful already. 😀

The metal clamped on it is one of my WIP for the Stick Welding on thin sheet metal , these are scrap C-Purlins welded together to make some welding rod casings.

OK that's it, to be continued in a few days again, thanks for viewing this thread.
