been seeing a lot of these in youtube so decided to make one for myself, here's version 1, will soon be updated to ver.2

got the wormdrive motor from hmr, but its only rated at 1/8 hp, i need something around 1/2 hp or more, anyone know where i can find one?
ver 2 will be using two parallel slider shafts for a more stable blade movement.....and no more masking tape to hold the capacitor hehehe....

Re: DIY power hacksaw project.....

got it for P1.6k bro, looking for something bigger, this one starts to slow down after about 5 min. of cutting stainless tubing, yun mga gamit sa lechon manok grills pwede siguro, around 120 rpm lang kailangan, will ask around how much a new worm drive motor costs.....

Looks very nice and complex to build. Bow ako sa tiyaga mo, bro!

An ignorant metalworking question, pls: What's the advantage of the power hacksaw over the common chopsaw?

capacity of cut especially on solid pieces, chopsaw is limited to cut pieces... heat is one of the biggest factor here since a power hacksaw is usually cooled by a liquid cutting coolant, but generally cooler even without it.... cooler is important in some metal to avoid distortion or to avoid changing the metal properties.

Re: DIY power hacksaw project.....

The blade frame is aluminum and the slide is stainless rectangular tubing, wanted to keep the moving mass as light as possible. There is a commercially available product which costs around 29k but its big and bulky and uses 14 in blades and around 9tpi, usually i cut thin walled tubing so i need a higher tooth count around 14 to 24 tpi. The advantages of a metal bladed saw instead of an abrassive saw is in how clean the cut is made. i usually work on stainless and aluminum and an abrassive saw can't cut aluminum. On stainless, an abrassive saw would leave a burn mark on the cut and would contaminate the weld if tig welded and also it leaves behind a lot of burrs to clean up, unlike a metal saw which makes a nice clean precise cut. Although a chop saw also has its advantages, it cuts quick and is portable, maybe a bit noisy and dusty also hehehe...but every tool has its advantages thats why i also use a chop saw when in a hurry.....otherwise i use a bandsaw instead, the power hacksaw is just a project i made since i don't have one yet... as for the cost, maybe around 4 to 5k, once i replace it with a bigger motor and stiffer slide then it might come to half of the cost of a real saw...or maybe more, it's not really how much it would cost but the experience of building it....Ver 2.0 coming up....

Re: DIY power hacksaw project.....

Thanks for the reply Butch, i did figure the machine would cost around 30k, i just didn't think that the one you made uses the regular hacksaw blade. Tig is somewhat demanding requiring cleam materials all the time. Like i said earlier, nice work and looking forward to more...
