i made mine from 1/4 x 2 angle bars and 2 axle bearings as the pivot point, welded the angle bars directly on the bearings to minimize the gap between the lower plates and the top plate to hold the sheet metal. A bushing and shaft arrangement would also work like those seen on portable benders, but had to make mine in a day, needed it quickly......the next thing i made is a sheet roller and a bead roller, if i have the time i'd like to make a planishing hammer and an english wheel......thats where the mill and the lathe comes in, to make more tools hehehe...btw i can only bend up to 2.4mm aluminum and 1mm stainless, otherwise the angle bars would bend already, even added bracing already, for thicker materials, i think pressing is the way to go....

I also got some pics from the web for ideas. So far I have no definite plan yet but I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. Just want to make drawer making easier for starters.

Please post any pics you have about DIY sheet bender ideas. Maybe we could just come out with something better or more useful for our local use. 🙂

The pics you showed looks more complicated for me IMHO. Yes I see the sample sheet being clamped by the two angle bars but then how was the rest of sheet metal bended, by hand? I'm kinda confused here ! :confused:

I don't see any hinges welded to another angle bar that will move and fold upwards bending the sheet metal. Are you in a rush to build a prototype 'cause my idea is more simpler in nature that you can just clamped it on a welding table like yours and you have an instant sheet bender. 😉 🙂

@Bro R .... it looks more like a sheet holder to me. I believe the builder still use hammers to do the bends.

I'm really not in a hurry to build but rather am collecting data now. The idea is to consolidate different design info here so a DIY who wants to build a sheet brake press can use this thread for build inspirations.

Please post pics of designs you gathered. It will be useful for us. In the end we the builders decide the final outcome from incorporated ideas presented here.

JayL, The wheel bearings are welded to the ends of the angle bar for smooth movement of the angle bar press.
