Been doing some crude cutting and welding on some angle bars to fabricate a rack for my wood stash. Kapagod!

Now, I need to install the rack onto my concrete wall with some expansion bolts. So I got a drill bit with "Cobalt" on the label so I can drill holes onto the steel angle bars. The first hole was quick. Not even 5 seconds. But when I went to the 2nd hole, I just can't pierce through. The bit's point just sound like it's skidding.

I tried another bit. Same. First hole quick, 2nd hole eternity.

Any idea what's happening?

Any recommendations on the proper bit?

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Baka you drill in continuos and high speed sir..
Pag nag init kasi yung bit mabilis pumurol tapos yung bakal nagiging tempered
Result nun mas mahirap butasin..

Yes ... smaller bits like higher speed while bigger bits drill well at lower speeds. Pilot hole is also good. Feed pressure is important as well when drilling metals. Constant feed pressure ... if it's cutting metal then you are good and just maintain it.

Get a Norseman Magnum Series Drill Bit Set and be done with metal drilling 🙂

WIP pictures please Bro Ding ... we'd love to see your wood racks.

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

BRAVO bro ding!!!!!!!!!!!! Its nice to know you finally gave metal working and burning those rods some time. I know your angle bar frames have been sitting there for ages since you purchased your YAMATO Inverter machine !

Well with regards to drilling holes on them angle bars, you can prevent "wandering of bit" by using a center punch first, you can position it at the center of where you will drill a hole then whack it twice or thrice to create a small crater on the metal. Then that is where you start drilling your hole, like bro bugel and JayL have mentioned, you start with a smaller bit first at a high speed and then move to your next intended bit size now at a lower speed. I know you won't have a hard time drilling holes coz you are using if I may recall only 1/8" thick wall of angle bars, correct me if I am wrong.

Plus maybe its time to get a Drill Doctor to resharpen your dull drill bits. Ask bro Jay about it. 😉

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Ha-ha. Salamat, dear friends.

My son, who studies in Davao, was back in town for the three-day weekend so I planned on abusing his steady hand for welding yesterday. But his Mom stole him to shop for his stuff. So I was left alone melting all those rods into ugly globules on my angle bars. Well, he helped me grind away this morning all my excesses/mistakes so all is well now.

Thanks for the suggestions on drilling.

Also learned that working with metal is really tough. I have black metal dust all over me from cuting and grinding. And I keep holding things that are still too darned hot. Buti na lang may gloves. Otherwise, my hands would have been like red tomatoes.

Jay, paki-PM naman ng cheap set of Norseman.

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

LOL .... yes Bro Ding drilling metals is a a bit tough and with a slight learning curve but knowing you I'm sure all will fall into place sooner than later.

The advantage of having a good drill bit set to start with is that you can later dress or sharpen these thus maintain a longer lasting sharper cutting edge. Even having a Drill Doctor sharpener and not having the better bits would still be a step backwards. One would just spend more time sharpening rather than drilling.

For a set such as the Norseman Magnums I try not to use the smaller bits unless absolutely necessary and for more precision work. For run of the mill small holes drilling I do keep a set of mid priced bits and consider these as throw aways.

Here is a good Drill Bit Set.

PM on the way for the same set as above. Ex- stock Pasay City

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Kakahiya man, eto:

I know, tabi-tabingi.

So far, rack can hold the palo china. Pero I have some 2"x10"x10' mahogany planks na medyo nakakatakot ilagay. Will probably weld some stifffeners/reinforcements to be sure.

BTW, nakulam ako. Got the Norsemans from AmaJay. The set looks awesome! Masubukan this weekend.

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Bro ding,

Ayos naman ah for your first metal project, it became very functional and effective for your purpose, kaya lang I think you forgot to add some support or gussets to the horizontal angle bars carrying your stocks, those heavy loads might be giving stress to your welds. Hope there is complete fusion and weld penetration on the joints, just for peace of mind I guess. Knock on wood, "wag sanang bumigay".

If you have some free time, see if you could somehow add some support underneath the both two end supports and the middle one as well para hinde masyadong matrabaho sa iyo ! If you're having a hard time welding you can opt to drill holes and bolt your gussets to the angle bar walls using thick flat bars, say 3/16" or 1/4" thick by 2" dia. since you already have the Norseman drill bits. Then use 3/8" X 1" nuts and bolts.

All in all nice project ding ! 😉 :groupwave:

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Oo nga.

Bakal kasi. I don't have a feel for carrying strength. Pero I have not loaded my mahoganies yet precisely because I'm worried. Will put some strenthening over the weekend.

Thanks!

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Ding, may I suggest you get yourself a chop saw, not necessarily the expensive one, perhaps you can select from, like Skil, Black&Decker or the Vespa being sold by EY Industrial Supply Inc. since you will be using it occasionally, but what is important here is that it will make cutting metals safer than using your angle grinder with a cutting abrasive disc, baka kasi by accident the disc might shatter on you and might pose some injury. Check out DIY Stores or Home Depots or mall hardware stores and see what brand you will prefer to choose plus compare prices. 🙂

Better to be safe than sorry in the end, concern lang bro sa safety ng valued member !!! hehehe 😉

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Salamat, Bro Rosy.

Yes, I have a chop saw already. Got a Bosch courtesy of Golden. If you recall, part of the prize I won last year was a Bosch blower but Bosch seemed to have difficulty on supply so I asked Golden na chop saw na lang, I just paid for the difference.

Used the chop saw recently when I cut an angle bar into 2-inch lengths and bored holes para maging bracket ng acoustic panels I built for my home theater.

Sarap ng may chop saw pala.

But working with metal for me is really tough. With bakal, I get black dust all over and I keep holding hot metal! Also forgot to wear long pants while welding so my legs are now leopard! 🙂

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

OH I didn't know you already have a chop saw, well, that is good, it will sure make cutting metals more safer whether its thin wall or thick wall metal even solid ones.

HAHAHA, that's what you call now natural leopard skin legs, well in less that a week wala na yan !

Ha ! now you just gave me an idea for a new thread during welding sessions !!! :soccer: 💡

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Encouraged by my crude but successful welding endeavor, I went to the junkshop on Sumulong to get some more angle bars and construct a second set of shelves and a small worktable.

I did my first miter cuts and welded my first miter joint. After chipping off the slags, it looked perfect! I was so happy with myself I immediately lifted it to inspect further. Was holding it up for a few seconds when I realized it was still extremely hot.

Dropped the thing, tore off my gloves, all the while spewing words I never thought could come out of my mouth.
