Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Some more advice, please, from the bakal-gurus.

Yesterday, while doing some miter cuting on my chop-saw, my disc made a loud sound and started spinning off-balance. On inspection, I noticed that the edges have been frayed.

I thought baka dahil luma na. Brought it to the local Wilcon to get a replacement. Was surprised na it was a 14-inch disc pero less than 10-inches na lang yata. No Bosch discs so got the next best thing: B&D

This afternoon, continued my miter cutting and the same thing happened. Frayed a brand-new P295 disc!

What am I doing wrong?

I'm cutting an angle bar. I need a 45 degree miter on one side and straight 90 on the other. Imagine I need to construct a box with the angle bar. What I do is to set the chop-saw's clamp at 45 degee then set my angle bar with a flat side resting on the base and the other clamped to the fence. The vertical side will then be cut straight down while the side on the base will be cut at a 45 degree angle.

Help, please.

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Have not experience that yet but probably you are giving to much pressure or pressing hard the cutting disc onto the angle bar you are cutting. When cutting metals, whether pipes, tubings, angle bars, solid bars etc etc, just a light pressure is applied letting the edge of the disc severe the metal little by little. Watch the sparks appear as the edge of the disc touches the metal then maintain with a light pressure, move it down slowly and just coast along with it as it cuts down the material, don't force it to cut immediately.

What I usually do when half way cutting metals is to reduce or release a bit of pressure then start over again and continue giving the same amount of pressure on the cutting disc until the metal is completely cut.

Lets wait for others who uses a chop saw as well when cutting their stocks for a project.

Hope this helps ! 😉

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Or maybe expired na yung disc..

Lately ko lang nalaman na my expiration date pala yung abrasive disc.
Baka nag loosen na kung ano man ang pinang dikit sa abrasive compound.

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

naexperience ko na rin yan pero sa 1k watts na grinder at sa bilis ng rotation ay hindi halata ang imbalance ng disc. sa chopsaw mas maevident siguro dahil lower rpm at mas mabigat ang disc. mejo enthusiastic lang ako sa grinding that time....siguro (or most of the time) ganun din, a case of overpressure sa feeding yan sir.

para mamonitor eh ilista siguro kung nakakailang cut yung disc bago mareduce to a certain desired point of replacement. additional na trabaho hehe..

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Thanks for the advice.

Medyo nagmamadali nga ako mag-cut. Madiin sa handle.

I thought baka lang mali ang technique ko in clamping down the angle bar. Did I do it right as described?

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Tama naman sir yung description mo..i assume sa flat side nag start masira yung blade (45 degree) flat na kasi ang kagat ng blade sa angular medyo hirap ang chop saw dun..dapat hindi ganung madiin let the blade do the work..

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

I remember tuloy my advice to my kids pag nanggigigil sa pag-cut ng steak:

Don't drive down the knife and tear at the steak. Move the knife back and forth and let the serrations saw the steak .

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

Well its just the same thing when using an angle grinder with the abrasive cutting disc/wheel, you don't just slam it down on the metal you are cutting, just have to let the disc edge cut the metal applying very minimal pressure starting from one end and then moving it forward and backwards slowly severing the metal surface 'til the wall is totally cut !!! 😉

Forcing the disc/wheel down may fray the disc edges or may shatter the disc itself which may cause un-wanted accidents. 😮 🙁

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

you may want to try too another cutting position na kung saan yung corner is at the top and the two edges of the angular bar is at the chopsaw base. then "feel" which position is more comfortable for you and the disc.

Yes. That's how I cut angle gars when I want both sides cut at 90 degrees. But for the miter box corner, I would need one side cut at 45 degrees.

BTW, got a new disc today from Wilcon. Tyrolit na kinuha ko. It's triple+ the price of the usual discs pero I hope it'll last and perform better. Of course, no tool is a match for improper technique so I will also adjust.

One thing I noticed. I may not be clamping my bar tight enough. I observed that, as I cut, the clamp slowly turns, unscrewing itself, because of the cutting vibration. I recall now that there was a rattling sound before the disc failed. I had thought it was the disc cover. Perhaps it was the bar I was cutting.

I never noticed that before because I semi-close my eyes into narrow slits when the sparks fly. I have kasi only glasses (no face mask) so I fear the sparks may get into my eyes. Will try to wear my ADH when cutting now for full protection and I can fully open my eyes pa.

Use a polycarbonate working lens when cutting. Marami sa sulit na mura. If the disk sits well on it's mounting shaft place a dab of thread lock on the threads before you tighten it para ma reduce din ung vibration sa disk and the lock nut. You will notice the difference right away.

Thanks, Willy. Did not know there are masks specifically for grinding. Meron nga sa Sulit.

Re: Drill Bit for Steel

HEHEHE, this would seem to be another "KULAM" opportunity for some !!! :bat::borg1:

Bro Ding, I guess its time to get yourself UVEX bionic face shield from amazon or from our tool importers here, if you prefer the local type, get your face shield from mall hardware or DIY Shop, LOTUS brand, works great too for protection of face and eyes. You may opt for a clear lens or a shaded 5 lens. :cool01:

PS, Pa order ka kay joey 81 habang nasa US para bag balik nya, meron ka na !!!
