Help me Design my 1st BI/Gi Ladder

Hello, I am planning to do a simple DIY for a 13 ft ladder.

this would be my 1st time to build a simple ladder.

what size should i get for the 2 main pillars?

my buget is only 1.5k.

what I have now is a portable Arc wellding machine (200amps) , 1 kilo of slim wellding sticks. and a few i deas. lol

please help me. thanks 🙂

is that a fixed ladder or mobile ladder?

for mobile ladder, need it for repaiting our roof.

im aiming for bi or gi tubes for pillars,

and angle bars for the steps.

Bro, using BI pipes( black iron ) will not last long due to easy rusting even if it is painted
with several coats outside, and what about the insides of the pipes? Its still advisable to use GI pipes specially if you can get the thicker gauges 36 or 40 walls. It takes long before galvanized iron gets rusted, what more if its painted.

For your pillars, you have two options, you can have it the same width top end and bottom
end so you can save on the size of the steps with uniform lengths or....... you can have, say the
top end step at 24" wide and the bottom end as the first step at 30" or 32" wide. Then you just
measure the length and cut each piece of step as you go up.

For your two pillars, you may opt for a 1" or 1 1/4" GI pipes. See also if you can add some more
to your stated budget just in case, kasi magalaw ang presyo ng mga bakal these days. Oh by
the way what size and thickness of angle bars are you planning to use for the steps ?

thanks sir rosy,
im not so familiar with 'angle bar size's, pero nakabili ako before sa isang metal shop 2x2 thickness ay hindi ko sure. pero manipis lang.. gumawa kasi ako indoor stair na made ng angle bars na may 4 pillars.
now gusto ko naman gumawa na 13-14feet na outdoor ladder.

baka pwde makahingi pa po ng idea sa number of steps at standard size ng steps. at recommended nyo na steps, kung anglebar or GI pipe na din.

may mga nakita ako na GI ladder 1/2 lang gamit nila, kaso takot ako pag manipis at mataba ako. hehehe

Bro ComPeter,

Angle bars are measured by width/dimensions, say "1 x 1", 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" x 1 1/2", so on and so forth, and thickness of wall is measured by inches, say 1/16", 1/8", 3/16" or 1/4". Anyway you may use either angle bars or pipes as the steps.

Usually spacing of each steps from the ground to the first step is 12" (1 foot) and the same with the next consecutive steps until you reach your desired length or height. Well if you are in doubt of using the 1/2" pipes as you are on the plump side, then I guess its the 1"GI pipes all in all or the 1 1/4" GI pipes for pillars with 1" GI pipes as your steps.

Since you will be using pipes for pillars, may I suggest not cutting the ends with threads for the upper portion, you can just buy two pieces of pipe cups that will fit the diameter of the pipes and simply thread it there to seal that top portion and for the bottom part, you may plug the pipes end by welding some pieces of flat bars or plates.
