I need to take off shorter metal stocks out of the floor so will be building a simple metal rack.
and stick it on this wall ....
I'll use 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square tubes 1.5mm thick

If I had more available floor space I would have built something like this ... maybe when I get a bigger shop LOL ...

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
best orientation I have found when cutting angle bars on the chop saws ... easier on the blade.
for the wall fastening ... will bore holes on the angle bars for expansion bolts.

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
Three 78 inches long legs ...... 9 brackets .... I hope I'm not skimping on the wall fastening . 9 pcs 5/16 lag bolts.
None the less the legs bottom ends will be on the floor so brackets will take care only of the horizontal force. The load would be heavy considering it would be metal stocks.
Another way to strengthen load carrying would be to incline the legs and not to fasten these flush to the wall. Extended brackets are not a problem to fab.
the plan calls for 4 layers ... 12 arms all in all.
or maybe just keep the legs flush to the wall and install triangular feet on the legs to relieve some pressure on the wall fasteners.
I don't want to imagine accumulated metal stocks so heavy that the wall support gives out and the metal plunging to the parked car or worst yet a person ... LOL ... that would be a disaster and not so funny anymore as the joke now hehhehhe

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
Look at these angle bars .... 1 1/2 x 1 1/2" and allegedly 3/16" thick which I measured to be 3.5mm ( less than 9/64) Notice the difference ?
The right one is 3.5mm on the outside but thinner going on the inside corners. The left one is all even and they call it 3/16" standard hehhehhehe.
I made the mistake to use sub sub standard on my wip's legs and decided to cut off the mistake.

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
I'll cut all these sub-sub standard and replace with sub standard
here welded newly cut " standard 3/16 flat bar " .... now sub standard 3/16 is at least better hehhehhe
Now for the metal rack arms

The the sad reality in the Philippines.
I canvassed some 2"x2"x 1/4" angle bars recently. To my surprise, they have several types of this angle bar, with varying total weight and thickness.
I went to more "sosyal" local hardware and it the same. they have 4.5mm, 4.00mm and 2mm thickness but all are classified as 2"x 2" x 1/4"
And considering 1/4" is approximately 6mm, even the thickest below standard.

Yes and the solution to this is that we have to be totally knowledgeable of all under sizing aspects. Please keep on posting info so that we DIYers can be made more aware when purchasing metal.

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
I was having measurement problems while marking the square tubes with a carbide scriber. Multiple lines in almost the same spot already and I don't know anymore which one is true. My solution ... Dykem Blue layout fluid ... so now I have a clear single scribed line.
If you work on square tubes you'll love this Shinwa marking tool .... 90 & 45 degrees .

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
My camera is acting up ... I have no pictures of the clamping strategy I used to tack weld the arms. Anyway here I'm checking the arms alignment to make sure all is leveled prior to full welding.
Master Ronnel suggested that additional flat bar supports or square tube gussets be installed in the arms since these will be holding heavy metal loads.

Re: JayL's Metal Working Garage
Clamping for full welding the arms .... nag warp pa rin ang legs pagtapos ... ano ba yan grrr
Butt welding malakas talaga hila and warping
Gussets support to increase load carrying capacity
Full welded and supported arms ... madami dami rin metal maisasakay dito sa rack na ito.
