Re: JayL's Garage Shop

Eto na uli temp jig ko. Wag lang gagalaw ito bagsak lang ng bagsak tapos agad mga frames.

If you work on angle bars then this 8" Mayes square is a good tool to have. I stock these specifically for this purpose.

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

Most important for me is the frames are all of the same size give or take 1/32 in. No parallelogram as well. In this case the vertical members will self align when welded.

Slightly bowed angle bars are sometimes unavoidable but if present will be corrected when the plywood part is installed.

This technique provides good repeatability in frames fabrication. If the members are a bit short then it can be easily corrected. However if these are longer then won't fit the jig. Corrective grinding will be necessary. One can't go over the jig's inside perimeters thus the frames will be of the same squared size.

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

What thickness of angle bars/irons do you usually use for your shelvings, is it 1/8", 3/16" or 1/4" thick?

I was just thinking if its the thinner ones, it might pose a problem in the long run like perhaps sagging due to some accumulated heavy loads.

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

I used standard sized 1" x 1" x 1/8" bro. The ones I showed are 12" x 36" and 7 shelves high. These are the low load ones.

For the next bigger ones I have to build which are deeper and longer I plan to use standard 3/16" thick. Probably 1 1/4 x 1 1/4" angle bars.

By the way I use 3/4" plywood as well so this does help strengthen the build.

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

Today I needed a disc sander but don't have one. I do have a bench grinder and this will do for now. However I need to flatten the grinding stone surface first for it to be effective.

I chanced upon this piece of truing stone from amazon sometime ago for $15. I took the plunge and purchased it. It had been very useful since then to flatten the business end of my bench grinding wheel.

Sorry i forgot to take before pics but the grinding stone was a bit messed up since they used it for grinding pointed edges. After flattening I adjusted the tool rest so that it's just a bit shy in touching the stone.

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

Now I need to grind the edges of these frames .....

just a tad easier to use the bench grinder than an angle grinder with flap disc

so that the vertical members of the shelf will be fully flush with the frames ...

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

Dry fit ... hay monotonous build talaga pag production work ... 6 pa pag tapos neto. Mas malalaki rin. Thinking slotted angle bar na rin LOL. Naiisip ko no need na kasi ng painting pag slotted.

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

Bro JayL,

So not to make the production work monotonous and you will still be doing 6 more metal shelve frames, why not make a system like perhaps you working and finishing all the shelf frames and then after which you work naman cutting all the vertical angle bars ( standing ones ). Then perhaps fit them all frames with their respective 3/4" plywood.

Now after all is done, then I guess its gonna be assemble time until you finish all the 6 shelf metal projects. Just a suggestion or maybe you can think of another easier option. 😉

Re: JayL's Garage Shop

As I cross-posted in another forum:

You probably love metalworking as much as I love woodworking. But we completely agree that, even with our hobbies, it gets really monotonous when repetitive (as in production work, you say).

I recently made a dozen serving boards as Christmas gifts. Doing the same cutting, sanding, and finishing twelve times over is absolute drudgery!

For me, I just take lots of breaks, sit in my moaning chair, have coffee or beer, and admire the work as it progresses. That recharges my enthusiasm.

Merry Christmas to my favorite goodies-pusher!

Bro Rosy ... I decided to paint muna before continuing the wips. Break the monotony.

Naka dalawang shelves pa lang ako 🙂 .. primer painted ... bukas base and clear coat naman LOL.

Bro Ding ... thanks for the vote of confidence on my tool hunting :thanks:

I dug up this old Honda Civic front seat in the warehouse. Probably a good project for a moaning chair later hehhehhe
