.....critique/instructions/tutorial on use, that is.

I'm thinking of buying an old-school kerosene blowtorch. Something like this:

but I have ZERO experience using one. Can anyone give a quick rundown on how to
operate one, and on how appropriate it would be for the task I have in mind:

18# Flat GI sheet will have its galvanization removed, probably w/ all this excess acid
(HCl) I have acces to right now. Then I hope to use the blowtorch to heat portions
of the sheet that need to be hammered onto a steel form. I've tried cold-forming,
and it's just too funky a contour for the sheet to follow w/o a little help from heat...
but is a blowtorch capable of getting parts of the steel hot enough, so that forming
is easier?

Thanks,
h.

PS: I've been MIA for awhile, dealing with flood prep, then flood damage.
Anyway... can't quite wait for summer to start banging away at stuff again, lol.

Re: Looking for a Kerosene blowtorch

I'm sorry that you had to go through the horrors of the floods and now the aftermath repairs. We were flooded as well from the recent Monsoon rains that soaked most parts of the country so I can relate w/ your ordeal. Going back to your query, most of the stores that used to sell this kerosene torch have now switch to Butane or LPG torch. They are a lot easier to control, flame and heat wise, plus lesser fluid mess not to mention the portability of the butane type. Should you still prefer the kerosene type there is a store here in Marikina which sells that item. It's called SYGAL INTERNATIONAL SALES CORPORATION located at 389 J.P. RIZAL ST. STO. NINO, MARIKINA CITY. You may call them at telephone numbers 9421818 / 9411340 to inquire first. BTW, they also carry the LPG/Butane torches i mentioned. Best of luck!

Re: Looking for a Kerosene blowtorch

Hey bro horge,

We call that kind of blowtorch here in our area as " SUPLETE", now where to buy it ? at any big hardware stores with industrial tools or machineries. Sorry bro, I saw already your post query early this afternoon, I just forgot to make a reply.

Anyway bro I have one very similar to your pic and we use it to weld some thin GI sheets for chicken drinking pan and feeders. This kind of blowtorch is still very popular here in our place specially those shops doing repairs on car radiators. It can be used to weld copper, brass, and stainless thin sheets aside from GI sheets.

How it is used ?, Fill up that brass container (blowtorch) with 1/2 or 3/4 of filled of kerosene, and lock the attachment, pump several times to increase pressure inside, pour some little amount of kerosene or alcohol or gasoline on that cup attached and provided, lit it up then turn a nub that will release the pressurized fuel inside, then adjust the flame coming out to desired blue flames.
But before that nga pala, you should buy also two or three pieces of that sort of a thong, I do not know how it is called, its about 14" to 16" in lenght with a handle in one end and on the other end, different sizes of an arrowhead shaped rectangular metal which you place on top of the blowtorch to pre heat the pointed tip. You must also buy some few pieces of silverish tingga, about more or less than a foot length, this is what you use to weld two plates
together by melting a small piece of this tingga and spreading it on the surface or joint. i don't know if I have mentioned correctly all the procedures but better ask those guys using it sa mga radiator repair shops para sigurado.

OH, by the way, we use this blowtorch also for burning or removing hair from " kinatay na kambing" or for others para sa "kinatay na aso", yukkkss 😮

Hope bro you have already an idea on how it is used !!!!!!!!!!

Just an update on your query. The price range from the store i've mention ranges from 1.5- 2K. They have them on stock as well.

Re: Looking for a Kerosene blowtorch

Hey Guys, I sent one like this years back to the States for use by my brothers with their goats in the farm. They said its much better, cheaper and almost never run out of fuel. My Father used this a lot during his time. Just get a spare "sapatilla" for the pump.
