I plan to tap some angular bars and flat bars to make some temporary brackets to hold down some bent wood in place while waiting for the epoxy glue to dry.
The threaded hole would fit some bolts so I can tighten these brackets.
Got me tapping handles already and will soon be getting some taps bolts.
Can anyone here recommend the minimum thickness of a metal bar that I can tap. In other words, I'd like to get the thinnest bars possible (para matipid) which I can thread some holes in which would firmly accomodate some bolts.
Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
It would depend on the thread pitch and I'd go for metric if you plan to use thin metal. When you buy a tap set check their thread pitch if it would produce a complete turn for at least 1.5x so you could have a good contact.
Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
Thanks, Willy. the taps I saw have fine and coarse threads. I should get the fine thread then. Would you have a recommendation on metal thickness if I go for fine thread? Would, say, a 2mm thick angle bar be sufficient?
Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
Bro Ding, make thickness of your angle bars and flat bars at least 1/8" of an inch, at least it can provide some few threads for your bolts to hold on but of course much better if you will opt for a thicker wall like 3/16" or 1/4". The 2mm you are thinking is too thin for some thick bolts that you may use unless you will be using the small screw type kitchen bolts to tighten your DIY brackets.
Yes WillyF is right use the fine thread (pinong tornilyo) for the metric tap and die set you are going to get. :soccer: See if you can also ask bro JayL for some opinion.

Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
Computing for the minimum thickness for use with the Rockler T-Bolt (1/4" diameter, 20 threads per inch)
25.4mm / 20 = 1.27mm per turn
1.27mm*1.5 = 1.905mm
Your 2mm is good to go, Ding! 😉
Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
Thanks, Williy, Rosy, and Joey.
Haven't bought my bakal yet. And, since my son is in town this weekend (he's studying in Davao), I probably won't get to this until next week.
I will try to buy the thickest metal I can afford. Economics lang naman talaga ang limiting factor (story of my life). And, even if I can afford the thickest metal, it's not practical for clamps that I will possibly use only a few months.
Thanks, again!
Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
Got some tapping bits from King Bolt and the tapping handles from JayL. Ready to tap this weekend!
An officemate of mine says I should have some tapping oil to drip occasionally on what I am tapping. Is this a special oil? Or would Singer sewing machine oil do?
Re: Metal Thickness for Tapping?
Ordinary motor oil or Singer oil will do just fine to keep the threads you will be making easier and to free some of the metal debris. 😉

Nice videos, Rosy. Salamat!
