Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

Bro Ricky, HI there,

Bro have not started the welding table assembly coz plenty of parts to be de-rusted and also plenty of metal projects in line to be posted but hopefully soon I can start the welding process since I have found the necessary heavy duty wheel casters that I will be using, soon bro soon. :cool01: 😀

Why bro when is the new sched of EB kay na Timbs, meron na ba ? :p

And few more pics to share :

WIRE BRUSHING THE TOPSIDE and UNDERSIDE :

Bro ... maybe it's only the pic but does this plate have a slight bow.

Can bows in 1/2" thick plate still be corrected?

I spend a lot of time cleaning metals too in preparation for fabrication. Sometimes I wonder if it's better to apply rust converter / conditioner first before wire brushing. So far I do a 3 step process. Wire brush before fabrication then apply rust conditioner when the wip is done then wire brush again.

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

Bro Jay, the table top plates are totally flat , I think it was just the lighting that gave an illusion on the table top, I was doing that at almost past three in the afternoon and the sunlight is almost direct on to me while working.

Bro it was the underside that I was really wire brushing coz that side was full of mud and rust since the whole plate where I had it cut was just lying on the ground, in the junk shop they use that as their flooring since their place is no cemented. 😀

What I do in de-rusting is wire brush or grind the heavily rusted surface then apply the metal converter, the next day de-rust again using coarse sandpaper and re apply another coat of rust converter prior to fabrication. 😉

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

@Rosy ... when you say armored panel does it mean this steel plate is not the same as the regular ones sold in the metal stores?

Are there different types of metal plates?

Sorry bro I have overlooked this inquiry of yours a few months back but anyway, my reply is yes the armored panel that I have been talking about is different from the regular panels sold at metal stores, and are identified as MS plates or probably mild steel plates.

I learned learned about this kind of plate from a welding instructor of Tesda near our place. They don't use this kind of metal because it needs a special welding rod to achieve a total or complete penetration of welds. They prefer to use the standard MS plates or steel for their welding exercises. Masyado raw matigas ang armored plate/steel. 😮

These armored plates that I purchased from a nearby junk shop were sourced from Zambales or Subic I think, in one of those ship yards.

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

Bro Rosy,

Don't forget to invite me on the blessing of your Metal Work table ha. I was once a metal working enthusiast but now it's just a part of my history. Ung Tig ko nga na Ondoy nalang eh. Makita ko man lang some wonderful work like yours happy na ako. :cheerleader2::bounceD:

Of course my good friend willyfernando and thanks too for the kind words but before any table blessings will happen ( though I find this kinda ridiculous and funny ) I will still need to probably have or purchase a plasma cutter, a mig welder and a tig welder plus a DC stick welder.

Konting dispensa bro, ngayon ko lang nabasa post mo after more than two months na. 🙁

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

I have resumed work on this welding table, its an on and off thing for the past few weeks since I still have some pending WIPs line up.

Here are some pics that I have saved working on several parts little by little though I'm not really rushing the build of the welding table. The WIP is a sort of my step by step process of removing rust before the welding process.

Basically I would start by using a wire brush for this instance to loosen the rust then again follow it up with a very coarse hand held sand paper, still to loosen up and in someway scratch or remove more embedded rust on the metal surface, and then would start to use a belt sander over the entire surface and under the surface of the angle bar again reducing the rust dust on the metal.

Then after using a belt sander, wipe off the metal with a rug and then used an angle grinder fitted with a flap disk sander to totally remove the rust and exposing the bare metal.

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

Actually what I am working on are the 3" X 3" X 1/4" angle bars which will serve as the main top frame of the welding table.

As soon as I finish sanding a piece, I would wipe the bare metal with a rug dipped in kerosene or some mineral spirits like lacquer thinner or paint thinner as suggested by other members for the purpose of cleaning the surface and ensuring that there are no rust dust on the surface and then immediately wipe it off entirely with a rust converter then set aside to dry over night.

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

Cleaning metal stocks before welding will save a lot of time and hassles later. It will put a smile on the builder specially when on the finishing stages. 🙂

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

The rusted angle bar compared to the de-rusted/bare metal angle bars.

One more to go for the rusted angle bars plus saved these up so that I can use them as stiffener for the top frame, I'll be cutting additional pieces from excess angle bars, sand the surface, clean them up and grind the edges before they get welded on the under side of the angle grinder.

This is how these metal will be utilized, these metals will provide support for the main frame which will be receiving the four 1/2 " thick table top panels.

As soon as I have de-rusted every angle bars and cleaned the pieces of metals as support and have totally dried the rust converter, I'll start welding the angle bar frame.

TO BE CONTINUED !!!!

Yes bro Jay, you are absolutely right there, definitely !!! 😉

Though using a stick welder on a dirty or rusty metal will not matter much, but of course it's better to start the build clean so there will be no hassles in the end. 😀

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

sir, one quick way of cleaning rust off steel is to dip it in muriatic or hydrochloric acid, just be careful in handling the acid, it strips the metal bare and even removes zinc from g.i. pipes to make them safe to weld.....hth

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

Yes bro you are right there, muriatic acid cleans metals fast, the reason I did not use that is because of the stinging acidic odor and the chemical itself, masyadong masakit sa ilong but anyhow thanks for reminding me.

Re: Rosy's Heavy Duty Welding and Cutting Table Build

OK, to continue with the initial welds of the main frame, the underside supports :

Here is my initial set up.
The succeeding photos are going to be some sort of a step by step welding process taken by my son while welding the triangular pieces of metal supports onto the angle bars.

Two images of yours truly in the garage working on one end of the angle bar doing some tack welding on the metal supports. Some may be wondering why only in cargo shorts and rubber shoes, well its only gonna be some tack welding so less sparks flying, but made sure my upper torso and arms are well protected by putting on a scarf, a half face mask so I won't inhale the fumes, a brown leather apron and then my US denim welding jacket purchased in one of the "ukay ukay" near our town, plus of course a durable welding gloves.
