Hi there bakman,

First of all welcome to the PHM community, may we request you introduce yourself to the forum, we'd like to know you better as a new member of the community. We have a Member Introductions just below the Gazebo Forum.

Thanks,
rosy

Now to answer your query, of course you wire brush or use a course sand paper the surface to remove rust and mill scales, wipe it then brush your rust converter solution to the entire surface. There are rust converters that takes 15 minutes to dry and there are others that needs overnight drying. Anyway before applying your first coat of Red Oxide or the Metal Epoxy, I just simply wipe off the metal surface with a rag to remove excess dry powdery substance sticking on the metal and then apply two or three coats of the Red Oxide or the gray Metal Epoxy.

Well others may use water to wash their metals but personally I'd rather just wipe it after the rust converter dries up so not to contaminate again the surface with water which causes rusting. Now your choice what will be more convenient for you.

Hope this helps !! 😉

Maybe let's wait for others to chime in and give their own simple process of de-rusting and applying the Red Oxides or Metal Epoxies .

I was working on ship as one of a crew and our main job is to maintain metal away from rust since seawater prone to rust, so after chips the rust metal we wire cupbrush it some power sander and apply rust converter and day after before we paint primer we wash it with water alone so excess dry powder caused by the rust converter when dried...after a few months this area we applied rust converter was not good because the paint are easily chip off...as my opinion it is good to paint it primer directly after you remove the rust using cup ( wire) brush or better power sander...and just in case y

Rust converter is supposed to be used in rusted areas that are difficult to clean up. Its reaction with iron oxide forms a black protective layer on the surface of the metal.

Since you already cleaned up the metal surface with wire brush and sander, there were not enough iron oxide left for the rust converter to react with. The excess converter only formed a layer that is loosely bonded to the metal, which explains the paint chipping off easily. Probably much better if you skipped the rust converter.
