Thanks bro for sharing your thoughts in the forum. With regards to your observations regarding people who weld with only shorts and slippers, there are worst than that.

I have seen them with my own eyes specially in the place I reside and nearby towns/provinces where one would see welding shops just block/s apart, young or old welding with no shirt or just in sandos and shorts with only slippers and would just be holding that small shaded/tinted glass usually used for welding and with no gloves at all, and I would really just shake my head in disbelief, sad that these guys disregard total safety during welding and continue the bad practice, sigh !!! 🙁

Well so much for that observation, I think guys here in the forum have been properly informed and educated of the safety measures during welding.

Yeah i was stupid way back then,i usually wear shorts (boxers to be precised) and sando..hehehe..
After many times of burning my skin From neck to shoulder.i finally learned a lesson!
Wear long sleeves even though it is not comfortable it surely save your skin from burning!

It takes a week before my flawless skin back to to original form:D:p:D

Natuto rin with all the burns to remind us, the red necks, shoulders and legs too. LOL

unfortunately, osh is not strictly practiced in 3rd world countries such as ours. i think it's more of a cultural thing, not to mention the additional cost required for safety equipment. more often independent contractors do not have the financial capacity to acquire all kinds of equipment, just the basic ones (ie, manong welder in the welding shop at the end of the block only has drill, welding machine and angle grinder). so where's the safety equipment there? - either close your eyes when welding or wear sunglasses. pity, it doesn't work that way here.

let's get out of additional expenses and just dwell with the all time favorite angle grinder. if purchased brand new, angle grinders come with a safety guard. what most of the metal workers do is to remove the guard. why? it obstructs view. at an extreme case is to be bullied as 'bading' when using a guard at times called OA. Well, there's no homo when it comes to safety. the shards won't choose who to hit.

it's easy to educate, but it's PITA to change culture.

I just saw a video of someone welding in his backyard just wearing a t shirt. then i remembered Mang Frank who worked as a welder in my sisters welding shop...He would be welding sometimes with shorts and slippers and well, a long sleeved shirt. sometimes he would get small burns from the sparks but aside from that

We get these harmful rays from welding...

1. Visible light - causes eye strain, in extreme cases temporary or permanent blindness

2. Ultraviolet rays - causes arc flash...ung parang me buhangin s mata mo. causes burns to exposed skin like a sunburn, and over exposure to it leads to SKIN CANCER.

3. Infrared rays - burns to exposed skin, retina damage and cataracts

Just thought I should post this as a reminder to us guys doing welding...Safety first 😀
