Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

Nice graphic sketch bro, sorry to reply here again but have you gone around your area to canvas prices of the angle bars you will be using for your trusses ?? Just imagine the labor and time wasted in fabricating those trusses, cutting and welding all those pieces compared to using a 2" X 6" or 2" X 8" tubulars, not C-Purlins, much faster and easier to install, that's going back to my original suggestion of using the tubulars, because that is what I did with my kitchen annex overhang terrace extention, then used 2" X 2" X 1/4" angle bars as purlins welded to the tubulars, but that's just me, siting an example.

Decisions are still yours !!! 🙂

It's just me itching to do some things hahaha.

But recently, I've been considering your suggestion due to the reasons you mentioned. Plus I am thinking the 4m span is quite short.

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

Bro Fourtheboys69,

I have to admit, your sketch is good. I think the use of angle bar instead of purlins is ok and is suitable for short span trusses. For the thickness of the angle bars that you're asking, you can use 3/16" based on the drawing previously presented.

I would like to stress out that this is based on the previous projects/ experiences that I have encountered. The correct procedure is that this must be designed by an engineer to arrive at the most economical sections. Anyway, maliit na project lang naman ito.

You can also use tubular sections as suggested by Rosy but take note on the thickness being used. Again, this must also be designed para may basis tayo at hindi nanghuhula. But for the sake of this discussion, a 2" x 4" for the top and bottom chords and 2" x 2" for web will do. Mahirap lang dito baka sobrang nipis ng section na gamitin at mabutas na during welding. Importante kase ang connections. By the way, you can also use tubular as purlins for aesthetics purposes.

As for the cross bracings, attached it on the top chord.

Regards,

Jay

Eto recommendation ko.eto approved sa akin.

if you want to use 50mm equal angle bar 4.7mm thick(3/16).

on width of 3.24m you may use 3 off truss, so divide it by two.

on 4.1 m length use 3 off vertical purlin spacing of 0.8m

the 0.232 depth of girder is fine.

another option is to use RHS rectangular hollow section, kung malapit na hardware na nagbebenta sa inyo.

eto approved sa akin.

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

Yeah, tubulars will definitely do for his trusses to save time and money provided it is properly welded and supported at the top and at the bottom where it will be also welded on the fabricated beam. Only problem I see with metal suppliers is that why are tubulars being sold locally have this 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm thickness only, this is just kinda frustrating.

Does the thicker wall tubular have to be pre ordered from the steel manufacturing plant ???

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

2mm will do. the only problem is the sourcing. We have one factory in Cavite. I went to that plant 12years ago. But they have an office in Manila. I just can't remember the name, they are in the yellow pages. Not all steel suppliers stock them. Another option is C-purlins. It would sturdy once they are connected to each other.

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

I agree with Rosy, tubulars that are available locally are the thin ones. Actually we have 3mm, 4mm and 6mm available - but tubulars with such thickness have premium price.

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

Hi! Thanks for the replies!

I checked the price of the tubulars and it is quite expensive. Might go with angle bars.

I don't mind the work and time involved. I'm itching to do some stuff anyway after 2 years of being abroad. Project is not urgent as well.

Tama ba intindi ko. Imbes na 4 trusses pwede 3 trusses na lang? Bale 1.62m ang pagitan (Tig-isa sa edge tapos meron sa gitna)

Ano ibig sabihin nito?

"on 4.1 m length use 3 off vertical purlin spacing of 0.8m"

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

yes tatlo truss nalang

bale sa isang truss, 3 vertical web instead of 5 sa drawing mo. Then purlin spacing ay .8m

Corrugated sheet ba ang gamitin mo?

Cheers

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

just a poll:

which one would your prefer? and why?
first option IMO, is easier. second option looks better but requires more work.
BTW, I added a steel column made of circular tubes because nanay said the house wall might night be that sturdy.

Option 1 is based on bmac's suggestion on the number of trusses and purlin spacing

Option 1 (original option)

Option 2

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

For me option no. 1 will do provided 4 trusses will be used, since you prefer using small angle bars, it will be more sturdier, so why skimp on the trusses.

The same thing with option no. 2, those angle bar skeletons will also do, only thing perhaps in the final outcome you will have to add some rain gutters (" alulod ") on both sides of the roofing. 🙂

Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

Yes, I have considered the rain gutters because the right side is actually our neighbor's frontyard already.

Option two just looks better and fits the shape of the house that is why I am contemplating on it.
