Re: Size of angle bar for roof trusses

I canvassed some local hardware stores for angle bars (2"x2"x 1/4" and 1.5"x1.5"x 1/4")

To my surprise, each has has actually three (3) types of different weights and prices (color coded pa hahaha)

Meron silang white, green at orange (in order of weight from heaviest to lightest). Yung colors palatandaan lang yan.

Hi, fourtheboys96:

i like to help you decide. option 1 is cheaper cost than option 2 coz you have to fabricate 2 steel girder to support 4 trusses compared to option 1, we only need one steel girder. In my experience, since the span is equal 15'x15', you can use 3 trusses only whether option 1 or 2 but you need to used 2"x4"x1.5mm thk c-purlins, if 4 trusses then you can used 2x3x1.2mm thk c-purlins or the tubular 2x4 (rectangukar tube) either way will suffice.
And for option 2, supporting 4 trusses pls used 300mm ht steel girder instead of 250mm and 2x2x6mm thk angle bar for top and bottom and 1 1/2" x 4.5mm thk angle bar for web member.
pls let an engineer check the final layout before implementation for safety purposes. Anchorage is also important issue to look into.

.

I'm going for Option 2 because it fits the shape of the house.

No problem increasing the girder to 300mm.

The angle bar sizes you mentioned is similar to what bmac mentioned so I'll go for that size.

Thanks for the advice. This project will start January. Not in a hurry since I'm just a weekend warrior.

hello guys. koykoy here but it seems i cant login to my old account. anyway, i have revived my interest in welding, got a DC inverter (hitronic 200) and making some small stuffs like wallmounts for home theater speakers and stuffs. currently exploring the idea of putting a roof for my concrete roofdeck. just some thoughts, feel free to recommend please:

plan:
1. span is 10m, although i have an option to place a support post in between, bringing the span to 5m.
2. double slope design. planning 4 trusses at 2.4m intervals (covered area is 10m x 7m + 0.8m overhang)
3. very lightweight roof (onduline), on a 3/8 plywood batten with insulation.
4. 2x4 purlins at about 60cm
5. no plan to slope yet, probably between 25%-30%

option:
1. angle bar roof truss (per nzda sample) - top chord is 3x3x6mm, bottom chord is 2x2x5mm

2. tubular steel (just mm or mata-mata estimate lol or using the same sizes as above) - top chord 2x4x3mm, bottom chord 2x2x2mm

3. just a channel bar instead of trusses; supported at the center - is this feasible? this one would really make the process fast, but very heavy. if so, any size recommendation?
