I just started setting up a 2 car garage to a convertible welding shop. Managed to gather a few tools to start with. An Oxy Ace Setup and a 200A Powercraft AC Stick Welder.

I needed several parking chain post for our new auto shop ( www.autospeedmotors.com) and decided to try make these myself than farm it out to another shop. Here are a few pics I was able to shoot. The welds are too poorly made to show for now.

I guess the welding setup has to wait too as work needs to be done already.

You don't need to epoxy glue your phil thein baffle hardwares now. You can just drop over and we will weld together ....... 🙂

By the way thanks for the phil thein iinfo. Soon I will build a slightly bigger one for the car wash section.... masyadong magastos and vacuum filters.

Re: Welding Newbie

Tried Gas Fuel welding for the first time. Pipe joining.

Cutting test was a mess.

It will need a lot of practice and reading short of going to school before I can do this right.

Re: Welding Newbie

Stick Welder now has its dedicated power feeder. At least its safer than tapping into the house breaker boxes. Gauge 6 wire on the main and Gauge 10 for the outlets. The setup is now rated at 50A.

Stick welded some budget Bench Buffer and Grinder Stands.

Any suggestions & tips on setting up the DIY welding shop and how to learn welding faster will be fully appreciated.

Re: Welding Newbie

What is the usual and/or best way to learn welding? Is it by enrolling in a TESDA course?

Re: Welding Newbie

Probably enrolling to a course will speed up things.

For me I just downloaded welding DVD videos from the net and joined several US based welding forums.

Re: Welding Newbie

I got tired buying Stanley made chisels that don't last that long in a commercial duty auto shop. I saw some used suspension parts and tried making a trial one from a junk rack end part.

A bit of cutting, heating, hammering and grinding

This will be tried on real nasty jobs as the Craftsman chisels I have ( Manufactured by Mayhew ) are too costly to lose if broken. Reserving these for jobs requiring a bit more of precision.

Re: Welding Newbie

Here are some clamps I acquired for welding purposes.

Oxy ace welding can get expensive. The Victor welding mixer and tip that came with my set was a number 2 and is a bit big for sheet metal. I purchased a smaller one ( number 0 ) and it cost me 1,926 pesos. Ouch.

Re: Welding Newbie

Decided to beef up the shop arsenal today so I went out to look for another angle grinder for dedicated grinding duty. My eyes were on a Metabo but on second thoughts decided to get a Bosch partly because of their willingness to support the local DIY community and from a price point of view.

I ended up getting a GWS 8-100 CE. PRC Made. Variable speed with electronic speed stabilizer. 850 watts.

This grinder is considerably lighter than my Dewalt or Makita ( Dewalt is 4" while the Makita is a 4 1/2" US Model). This weight reduction is something good for the wrist but upon inspection of the grinders the Bosch had obviously more hard plastic parts than the other two.

I fired it up and it had no initial kickback upon start up ( soft start) . The electronic control does work too to maintain constant speed setting during loaded conditions. So far I'm happy and will put it into regular use. With regards to the durability factor time will tell. So far both my Makita and Dewalt had not failed me so I expect the Bosch to do the same. Warranty on Parts and Service will be 6 months.

I also purchased a right angle vise to use when welding flat bars, angle bars , square tubes & pipes at 90 degrees. The jaw height is 2 3/8".

Looking forward to build a welding table as soon as I find affordable prices for the materials. One thing good about metal is that you can always go visit the junk shops. Lots of surplus for around 20 pesos per kilo.
