Re: Welding Newbie

mig is easy to learn and a 90 amp ozito mig welder is an economical choice for your welding needs. I got mine for 5k too! i use 0.8 mm flux cored wire. I modded my welder to improve its performance like converting it to DC, adding CAPS, independent supply for the wire feeder, and installing inductors. Right now i'm converting it to work with gas so i can make use of the cheaper mild steel wire. btw the gun is already equipped with a gas valve which is a plus for the ozito brand. 1 reel of 0.9 flux core is around P1500-2000 and 0.8 mild steel around 700-1200/reel.
goodluck hunting for a mig welder!

brother, we have the same welder only i havent used mine yet. i bought it really cheap 3k to be exact, the catch is its missing the wire feeder roller. was planning on doing some diy fix for it.

i was wondering i you could post some pics about the mods youve made, im very intrested. also i was miss informed about all mig welders are DC hehe, sorry newbie.

Re: Welding Newbie

i havent use the gasless mig welder, is this expensive to use using flux cored wire compare to stick welding rod which is around P100/kilo? or almost the same? thanks

Re: Welding Newbie

hi JayL,
is this the Lenox hacksaw blade you mentioned?
this performs (Lenox Heavy Metal) better than any bi-metal blades i used. thanks.

Testing some hacksaw blades too on the folding table I'm building. Will see which one is better.

Top to bottom

Bahco Sandvik Sandflex Bi Metal ( Sweden )

The Starret Company Bi Metal ( Brazil )

Lenox Bi Metal ( USA )

MK Morse Bi Metal Cobalt ( USA )

Re: Welding Newbie

Try the Morse Bi Metal too. Very good performance and better priced too. In addition different teeth count configurations are available.

I buy these at Panda Construction Supply.

Re: Welding Newbie

I ain't up to snuff >_<. Consumed 5 sticks of 6013 on a 5/16" angle iron and this is what i got.

No penetration whatsoever. (Blob on the left.) It just accumulated on top. I remember i keep melting a hole in sched 20 pipes before and our real welder cutting angle iron with the stick welder. Aside from skill, they must have used 6011.

I'll get some 6011's, a welding mask so i can see, and waste a few dozen sticks in practice before i weld up the real thing. (Only got a 150 AC Amper, so too bad 7018's out for me?)

Re: Welding Newbie

Owyn,

Try to grind , wire brush or flap disc sand the metal portions to be welded if you have not done so.

try getting thick (1/2" or thicker) scrap metals then practice arc welding.

IMO, it is kinda difficult to get the perfect weld (as shown in your pic) using angle bars which are relatively thin. it will melt the metal unless you move the electrode fast enough or set the amperage low enough.

i have some welding tutorial videos downloaded from the net. maybe you can try that out.

Re: Welding Newbie

I'm still not there, long ways to go. But am on my way to having welds that are trustworthy. Making progress =). But dang, i can't make the transition from 6013 to the higher penetrating 6011 or 7018. Can't maintain an arc, always sticks. Tried messing with the amps too.

For more than 2 dozens of '13's consumed easily, I managed finish just 1 6011 and half stick of 7018?!? The 11's coating keeps burning away... I'll try another day.

I knew having a helmet with the right glass is the key. Wore a 3M respirator, leather gloves, crocs too. (Only wore shorts, will wear denim next time.)

Overall, welding is fun when you can see and breathe and don't get burned. I guess it's like using chopsticks for the first time.

I found I'm most proficient when doing strokes from top to bottom, or left to right.
