Re: Welding Newbie

What rod are you using Ossie? I keep hearing that 7018 and 6013 are pretty forgiving and welds nicely. (The 7018 is sensitive to moisture and thus require special storage but the 6013 isn't tho.)

Very thorough with the angle iron clamps... I forgot to tack while welding sheet metal to a 1/4" thick channel iron and paid dearly for it! Then on the next I made some tack welds (too small) which the hot bulging sheet metal popped out! I'm now a believer in the power of expanding metal.

Pics on the weekday but good luck to us both!

Re: Welding Newbie

@JayL,
yup, im building a door to practice welding hahaha remember i told you when i visited your house that i bought a compressor, spray gun, etc etc just to experience automotive painting, painting my scoot hehe

thanks for the info regarding the brush, how much is your score? is brush alone or with chipping tool on the other end? mind if you can post the pic hehe thanks

i bought the tubes for Php700 and its new. 2"x1"x2mm. i didnt bevel it anymore since its only 2mm thin, i just cleaned the surface/edges and did put gap for at least 1mm (or less) for better welds and joints. greater that 2mm, its a messed for a newbie like me as experienced on this metal (even 1mm allowance, im experiencing mess in many case, shhhhh). and btw, thanks for the advise re: bevel 🙂 and more advise to come hehe

@owyn,
im using 7024 and 6013 for T-joint coz the diameter of the 7024 rod i have is bigger which is 6.81mm. i inquired about the 7018 here in bacoor area but its not available like 7014 - which i directly bought at Toolec. but wants to try 7018 also, where did you get that and how much? Will wait for your WIP pics, enjoy and safety first 🙂

Re: Welding Newbie

Ossie the brush I purchased is just regular steel brush. I think 35 pesos each.

Please let me know about metal prices when you have chance.

The angle grinder is a welding newbie's best FRIEND. 🙂

Re: Welding Newbie

@JayL,

as sir Owyn said, if your comfortable and confident, weld will come out well, which is really true!

What he says is true.

I need to decide soon what Auto Darkening Helmet to get. I need it to be able to accommodate magnification lenses. This part is what makes welding for me uncomfortable and aging eyes are not helping. The local ones available don't have the magnification lenses available.

This one below is the most important part for me

You guys are young and don't need this so I'm sure your welding will be a lot better soon and we'll have to open a new thread for you all : Welding Pros

Here I shot some pics of my friends for you.

Re: Welding Newbie

hey jay!

i saw that wider steel brush with a black plastic handle at panda. how much is it?

yes, the reason why edward is pushing for the cheaper helmet is because the build is almost the same.

i didnt get one though.kaw na mauna hehe..

i was eyeing in fact for the 4" machinist vise with quick release, swivel base and pipe jaw at 3.2K..yes record england pa...the 950p basic vise is no longer in stock.

id like to ask the "hammer" thing in the above pic...with a springy handle..."flux" hammer ba yun? how much and where can i get one for me?

Re: Welding Newbie

I think the Showa brush was 40 or less pesos only.

The Die Grinder is very useful for close quarters grinding where a circular disk will not fit.

I use to use an air powered one but I got tired waiting for the smallish compressor to charge before I get full grinding speed that I opted for an electric die grinder instead.

Mine is a Hitachi Super Miller LDU4 Made in Japan unit. These are still available at LYS hardware in Recto.

Yes the stones and attachments are more often important than the tool itself. I tried Harbor Freight before for consumables like wire wheels etc but gave up. It was a big failure. Now I use Craftsman and I found these are better balanced.

Still looking for a supplier that carry US or Euro ( orig ha ) grinding stones and consumables. Makita might also be a good choice but have not tried these yet.
