Re: Welding Newbie

Hey guys,

I don't mean to splash water on everybody's enthusiasm on the Auto Darkening Lenses. I just wanted to share some important facts.

1. Don't confuse shade of darkness as the level of protection, its just for seeing how and where our work is going.

2. Speed of darkening is also relative to #1 ABOVE.

3. Level of actual protection should always be the amount of UV- ultra violet light that is being filtered out by the clear lenses, not the darkened lens. This is a fact know by almost all Photography enthusiasts as UV filters are placed in front of the camera, which changes the quality of the photo entirely when the shot is taken.

4. The light spectrum known as UV is also pretty broad, and has a few subcategories/frequencies as well.

5. Good brand names are a better bet, but doesn't mean its any assurance unless there are actual scientific reviews and tests on the lenses itself..

I am almost sure some readers have also done their home work, and the group here will surely appreciate any additional info on the subject of safety and protection. Please share it with us. 😉

Thanks in advance.

Re: Welding Newbie

thanks john.

as long as the helmet meet the ANSI (American National Standards Institute) ANSI Z87.1-2003 is ok, right?

but the problem is that if the cheapo helm was just put that ANSI for marketing strategy, who knows hehe

======================================================

What You Need To Know About The New ANSI Z87.1-2003 Standard

The purpose of this [COLOR="Red"]course is to give the eyecare professional an understanding of the ANSI standard and how it applies to the dispensing of safety eyewear. This course will allow the eyecare practitioner to understand the new ANSI Z87.1-2003 standard. They will know what it is and how it applies to the practice that dispenses prescription safety eyewear in industry or for home safety.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course the participant should be able to: define the ANSI standard; comprehend how the new ANSI standard applies to the dispensing of safety eyewear; identify the major changes from the old ANSI standard to the new one; describe the basics of the impact tests that separate the different levels of lens performance in the new standard; recognize the importance of dispensing the proper level of protection to patients; demonstrate, to a patient, the main features that distinguish protective eyewear from dress wear.

Re: Welding Newbie

We tested a really very difficult to use welding rod - the 7018.

No matter how good your ADH is it's not much help. This rod needs a good welding machine too. Probably a DC welder would be a better choice.

Go go go welding newbies!

Isn't this ANSI standard for impact only? Is there an ANSI standard for the darkeness of welding lenses?

I think there is ANSI Z87 on welding helmets because it is also being sold for use in grinding.

Re: Welding Newbie

I got chance to work on our rusty trap door today. 🙂

Wire brushed the lower end to see the extent of the corrosion damage.

I need to cut off the the rusted parts. If available I always go for air tools. Lighter and more controllable trigger on variable speed.

Looks like the rusting was now more than what I expected. Tapped repeatedly the door underside with a hammer and used pry bars to free the rust.

Re: Welding Newbie

3/4 on the way through cleaning and I got this already. A bit more on the inside to still scrape.

Once cleaned and all rust dust blown by air I start to wire brush what can be accessed. Turco is your friend for unaccessible areas. We let the chemical neutralize the rust.

I installed it back for now while I wait for the Turco to do it's job. I'll then power wash it up with soap and water , dry it ( maybe a second turco application again if still needed ) then apply primer coat on the inside before I seal it back again.

Here' a good read on Turco.

It's welding time later. Looks like I need to do some sheet repair here on this part to replace this damaged section.

Ossie I know you're welding today. Waiting for your posts.
