Re: Welding Newbie

need your advice, i'll be purchasing extension cord materials (cable, outlet, plug) for my welder, what should be the minimum amperage rating for the plug and outlet if my welder can do up to 160 amps, >160 amps din ba dapat? im confused kasi ung plug nung machine ay 16A lang ung naka-indicate.

started using the machine with an extension cord na 10amps, di kinaya eh

thanks

Sir Rolly, I suggest you use a 10awg wire burn rated around 105 degrees. Anyway sometimes I use 12awg as long as it is rated 105 degrees.. please don't use wire that have a low temperature burn rate like 65 degrees..

Don't settle for the extension cords sold in the market, they use very thin wire for 10A, make your own. If possible add a ground wire.

About your welder, I suggest you use a breaker around 20A or more, since you said your input current is rated 16A.

About the 160A it is only output current, in this you should use a bigger cord else it will burn.

Anyway, what is your input voltage? Are you using a 220v welder.

Re: Welding Newbie

wow at last nagawa din 🙂 eto yan o? hehehehe

I really need to DIY repair the garage door before rust fully takes over. .

What's the best solution? Just take out the rusted parts and replace. Any good metal treatment for the inside during repairs. I'm sure it will rust again because it always gets wet specially that it's near a faucet. tks

jay, madami ka ba stocks nito? or baka magawi ka pwede magpabili hehe thanks

I found some soap stones today. Very good for marking metal. 5 pesos each.

Re: Welding Newbie

OR you can setup your feeder to 50A, you can check out JayL's setup at the very first page of this forum...

pa post naman ng mga builds nyo hehe thanks

Re: Welding Newbie

yes, its included, here is the link:

What You Need To Know About The New ANSI Z87.1-2003 Standard
http://www.quantumoptical.com/onlinecourses/titmus/nas/slide1.asp?courses=1

Isn't this ANSI standard for impact only? Is there an ANSI standard for the darkeness of welding lenses?

I think there is ANSI Z87 on welding helmets because it is also being sold for use in grinding.

Re: Welding Newbie

@clayfigur / rosy, all,
nakapag try na kayo ng E7018 welding rod? if yes, musta naman? did you put it in the rod oven first before you use it or hindi na kailangan? thanks

got some info about the E7018 rod:

"I do agree that for specification welds 7018 should be kept in an oven at the proper temperature."

"A lot of small shops keep their 7018 in an old refer' with an incandescent light for heat. This at least keeps the condesation of off them.

A 7018 rod a couple of hours out of it's packaging in cold, wet weather is no longer low hydrogen. After a year in a damp basement or garage they are worse than 6011 for welding and can actually add hydrogen to the weld deposit. "

"As i under stand it most low hydrogen should be stored in a dry place then heater to say 300 degree for a time i think 2 // 3 hours be for use".

"AC is not the current to use for most 7018"

"7018's work best when warmed, it removes the moisture content from the rod coating. Most certifications done with the 7018's require the rod to be 180 degrees before welding. The reason is that the coating on the rods absorbs moisture quickly in fact a 7018 will absorb 80% of it's capability within the first 24 hours. If you don't have heated rod storage it's best to buy your 7018's in small quanitites. If you're going to be using a lot of 7018 you may want to consider a portable rod oven or as we call them here "hot box". Of course you can always make your own rod oven or hot box too. A lot of guys (and I've done it myself) will take old refrigerators and put a couple of 100 watt light bulbs in them and leave them plugged in all the time."

Available yan sa mga hardware for P5.00. Magandang pang mark sa metal. Other term is "chalkstone".

I used the the 7018 just once..It was really hard.. I guess, it was because I was using AC that time.. I'm working on converting my AC to DC.. I'll post the result as I finish.

Anyway, about the hot box, I made one of those before. Co'z, I bought a lot of surplus rods, that really needed heating..

yes, it's 220v.

may special amp rating din ba dapat ung ends nung extension cord (ung outlet at plug)?

I'm running a 200A Welder with thoughts of a Mig upgrade at a later date.

All my electrical installations are rated at 50A at the very least ( cable, plug, breaker, outlet )

For cable I use Phelps Dodge, Eagle for plug and outlet and GE for breaker.

Re: Welding Newbie

I set up for 14mm and 12mm drilling of the flat bars.

These Alpen drill bits from Austria are really good. I'll check the durability and see if they could hold their edge against Dormer.

Dry fitted the dowels. No problem. Clearance / Tightness ratio is excellent.

@ Ossie

You better please check this one out. The dowels I will be using are 14mm compared to the original 12.5mm you used. I did not compensate but maintained the 1" distance between center holes. Do you think this will cause a problem or have repercussions on the bending ability of the jig. I stopped drilling until I can confirm with you.

My dowels will be 3mm nearer each other than yours.

Thanks

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
wow malapit lapit na matapos ang bender version mo 🙂
yes thats ok, mine is also 1 inch distance center to center hole / i inch distance from outside to outsidediameter.

and if im going to build one again, i prefer at least 2cm distance outside to outside diameter. (using also 13mm dowels)

Re: Welding Newbie

So ok lang na mas malapit ng 3mm yung dalawang dowels? 🙂

Ok go go go drilling time again. D naman masyado maingay drill press so ok lang kahit gabi ....

Parehas lang design ng jigs natin. Why change something that works already for the intended purpose.
