Of all the drill press brands you mentioned above I'd probably go with the Powercraft if I only had those choices.

Re: Welding Newbie

Metal working is more on fabrication. Welding around 30% or maybe less depending on what you do.

The bender WIP none the less is a good way to build up skills for more demanding work.

This bench grinder needs a good solid and wider tool rest upgrade later. Best to keep the tool rest as close as possible to the stone.

Pattern made now so it's cakewalk for the 3 remaining flat bars.

However I wish I had a belt sander for this particular task.

Bosch should bring out their bench grinder locally too. It's available in Europe so it's a 220V model. The new Makita bench grinders have some clearance issues because of the change in body design.

Be Safe and make sure to wear Dust Mask and Goggles when grinding.

Yes they are all Made in China. However I noticed that Powercraft is geared more towards the commercial market. I reckon this has an impact on their product line up quality decisions.

Going Japanese, European or USA then the DP price shoot up abruptly. Probably starting at the 30K mark and up for bench models. Depending on your purpose and intended budget then going with high end gives more precision, quality and durability.

You can also consider the Milton brand if available in your place. It sells in Binondo for around 6.5k+ and this is the one I'm using. Lots to be desired in this DP but for the price paid I can't ask for more.

About drill press, its not that much problem if your on a tight budget. On my experience, only the belt needs replacing, if its the belted type. Try to look for a unit with more flexibility and a stronger motor.

I suggest you go for the Powercraft drill press, its distributed by Tools R Us! in cubao. having a local distributor is better, co'z its easier to have it maintained under warranty repairs.

Re: Welding Newbie

For quick low torque gripping these Lockjaw locking pliers are a good choice. Self adjusting.

@ossie

The bending angle of the handle when the dowels are on first settings was affected by the increase in dowel diameter and not making the necessary distance compensation between center holes.. I could bend max 90 degrees only without further modifications.

Other positions are OK.

Re: Welding Newbie

Thanks guys for your thoughts, infos and encouragements, actually I'm considering two brands of drill press, the POWERCRAFT down at
Robinsons Handyman and the JOHNSONS ELECTRIK at Hans Tools at the Shang in Mandaluyong because t hey also offer after sales service,
I think they are also distributor of Johnsons Electrik products.

Maybe I'll give them a visit this coming sunday and check out their drill press;)

thats ok, you can always use the other holes next to first dowel hole hehe dont worry, its also the same with my bender version.

Re: Welding Newbie

Rosy

I got my drill press at MyTools along ortigas extension going to taytay. Dai-ichi brand.. well its china. I am pretty darn happy with it. very minimal runout(or almost none, since i use exact diameter dowels , its always a snug fit) 6.5K if i remember correctly. The table needs a fair bit of adjusting everytime you change height. but thats about it.

Try bringing in a material to drill on and drill bit when you check out the johnson elektrik at hanstools or the powercraft at handyman. So you will get a feel, i believe they will let you run it. At least Hanstools will... They let me run their jointer (this is much more hazardouse than a DP)
