Re: Welding Newbie

The only benefit I see in an AC stick welder is if welding in a magnetically affected area. This situation can disrupt DC welding.

Another major advantage of AC welders is lower initial start up equipment cost.

Millermatic 180 Autoset Mig Welder
Miller Spoolmate 100 Spool Gun
Victor Firepower 350 Oxy Ace Outfit
3M Speedglas 9002X AD Helmet
Makita LC1230 Dry Cut Saw
Ingersoll Rand Air Tools
Snap On Tools
Metabo Power Tools
Norseman Drill Cutting Tools
Bosch Power Tools
3M PPS

Re: Welding Newbie

I'm also thinking of DC stick welder.. Rilon brand is sold by tophand, and powercraft brand sold by Elektro. (as ads in sulit.com.ph)

Powercraft 160A 11.7k
powercraft 200A 14.4k

Rilon brand 160A 10k
Rilon brand 200A 13.5k

I think the Rilon 200A would be a better dedicated Dc stick welder.. only 3.5k is the difference... but can weld upto 4mm electrode, unlike the 160a that is limited to the 3.2mm softmetal electrode..

Re: Welding Newbie

@clay,
if you have time and planning to buy DC welder, pls try to use both welder from tophand and elektro and feel which is better for the same amperage for comparison. Tophand offers trial of their machine, i dunno about elektro.

Let's go by bikes and ride together to test. We'll bring our stubborn 7018 rods. 😉

Re: Welding Newbie

i remember you posted your different brand and different amperage rating of your welders, why not use the heavy duty one so no need for modification to your small welder?

Regarding about cooling.. I was wondering of adding cooling fins to the transformer.. If it does not over heat, the sensor would not shut down the welder, therefore duty cycle could be maximize..

I'd be trying this in my jialli welder.. Hope it works.. The shutdown makes it safe for the welder against overheating.. but it annoys me b'coz I have to pause on working..

Re: Welding Newbie

Some of you guys appear to have graduated from being a "newbie". As for me, my small welder and skill limits me to 6013 "drag" rods- I think i'll be fine with that, enough to fabricate small stuff. Don't have the chops to maintain an arc for 6011's but sure want to get that down.

===

How bout cutting the threaded part and if the diameter of the clean part matches one of the die, make a new thread- is that feasible?

Re: Welding Newbie

i think 6013 is enough if we are doing small stuff and a really sensitive weld strenght is not that needed. even if we are using 6013, we can always see to it that our welds is really enough to pass in our own or others criteria 🙂

welding really needs practice, practice and practice 🙂
