Re: Welding Newbie

Jay,

Just curious, is there a place to buy Miller here or your planning on getting it abroad?

Re: Welding Newbie

I found a company selling Miller Welding Machines. They cater mostly to the industrial sector so their prices are a bit on the high side.

Re: Welding Newbie

Got all the bench power tools and vise mounted. The folding table frame is also ready. I will be mounting in front of where it is now. Can you please suggest what hinges to use. I will weld these to the frame and bolt it on the wall with additional 3/8" metal plates for support. For legs I plan on using pipes.

I also have problem with the walls. Water or moisture seeps in when it rains. Planning to cover it with pegboards but am afraid these will get damaged by water when it rains hard.

Re: Welding Newbie

How about you make your own hinges? On my boats I've made "hinges" (for the rudder) with 12 mm stainless steel pipe and 12 mm shafting. Work great. In your case the shafting can be one length. To get them to all align, the tricks is to weld the hinges with the table parts braced in their folded out position. Take care to balance the welds and use only spots so the pipe does not distort (happened to me).

How about barrel hinges used for gates ... difficult to align though.

If that's firewall then maybe a few coats of a sealer on the outside will do, on the inside might work too.

I'm planning to put only three or four hinges. Do you think the barrel types used in gates will work well welded to 3/8" plates ( which I will bolt to the wall ) and the metal frame? I can weld these first before mounting the table. In that case the wall holes will be adjusted accordingly to make the table horizontally aligned.

If that's firewall then maybe a few coats of a sealer on the outside will do, on the inside might work too.

I don't have access to the outer wall. There's maybe a few inches gap between my wall and the neighbor's wall so if there is any treatment done it has to be from the inside. I tried sanding sealer and other stuff but to no avail. I'm at a loss now.

More so during rain the water is trapped between my wall and my neighbor's wall which makes things much worst.

Thanks for your insights.

Re: Welding Newbie

I've never tried it Jay but ThoroughSeal (?) I heard works. Try calling Ultra Cote, I think they have epoxy formulations for this application.

I think it is going to rather difficult to get good alignment with barrel hinges. Even the pros don't alway seem to do a good job. The key is to align the pins of the hinges along the same axis otherwise even if the thing does swing the hinges will be stressed more than they should.

Re: Welding Newbie

Probably regular door hinges "bisagra" will be better then. I hope there are thick ones available. I could always chop any excess parts that will protrude and grind the edges. I don't need to screw these because I can weld it. How about the metals these are made of. Will I have problems welding these to angle bars and mild steel plates.

tks

Re: Welding Newbie

I've been looking at hinges recently because I need them for the boat. I think you won't have any problems finding something you can use bro. I'm not sure but I think there will be no problems between stainless and mild steel.
