Hahahaha yes we do remember the last documented EB.

Here is a good read on Drill Bits. Looks like metal drilling is more demanding because of the material hardness so it's best to do the homework.

http://www.friesen.com/electric/DrillBitTechnicalInformation.pdf

I need shorter drill bits for better rigidity and increased strength so it seems that the Mechanic's Length is the choice.

A lot of metal workers swear by Norseman drill bits. Arguably one of the best around.

http://www.norsemandrill.com/Ultra_Dex_Facep144.html

A bit expensive initial investment.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260461910628&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

These bits sure would be good to drill head snapped bolts.

Re: Welding Newbie

Ooh lala. Thanks for the info BB's (bakal boys!) I guess if you really need a piece of specific thickness you can't find in the scrapyard, this is where we go to.

Although the cost sure add up quick (saw the post of JayL with the prices), shoulda gotten every angle bar i could from my free source =/.

Full length ( i.e flat and angle bars ) are cheaper. It's the cut to size purchase that's really expensive.

Bro we'll be anxiously waiting your angle grinder jig. Such DIY power tool jigs are also good provided safety features are incorporated into the design.

Yes, I will be pacing the guard back.. also I plan to put a suspension to avoid sudden impact of the blade and metal.

Here's the pic, it still need a handle and a movable vise.. I'm also thinking of making the vise adjustable to make angular cuts.

Yes, i will be placing the guard back for safety. I will also add spring suspension to prevent sudden impact to the blade. So that the cutting wheel wont brake easily.

Here's the updated pic. It still needs a handle and a vise to grip the metal to be cut. I would like to make the vise adjustable to accommodate angular cuts.

I'll update the pic when the angle grinder jig is fully finished.

Wow, looks like your tempering steel. Anyway do you guys have a source for Kasanit or
Sodium Ferrocyanide, Na4 Fe(CN)6.
this is a substance added to salt to avoid caking. If it used in tempering metals, it adds carbon to steel, thus giving it more rigidity than just ordinary tempering and quenching.

I have no known sources for this as of now, maybe you guys know where to source them out.

This is a link about case hardening of metals and tempered quenching.

Re: Welding Newbie

The workshop is in a mess.

@Ossie I decided to weld the handle. It seems I can't fabricate for the stationary part unless I have a handle.

Too much problem. I violated a rule. Metal bends and moves while hot and during cooling. I did not clamp during the initial welds trusting the dowels will maintain squareness. Now I'm trying to reverse the mistake by clamping while welding the other remaining joints.I hope it works.

The welding is still ongoing as I post for coffee and cigs.

First pass 6011 ( resulted in PB ). I forgot to clean the metal parts before welding.

Cleanup in preparation for second pass.

Second pass 7024 drag electrodes.

Welds house keeping

We need lots and lots of practice. Newbies Go go go. Now I'm going back to the shop to weld some more.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
yup, you need to assemble and weld the handle assy before proceeding to frame assy, i also started the same thing. 🙂 practicing and learning from our mistakes make us good in welding. if it didnt work out, try another process. remember "bigote" while welding hehehe

go go go! more pics... hehe

Re: Welding Newbie

It's 10 PM. I can't grind anymore. Will continue tomorrow.

Something's not right. If I remove the spacer the flat bars close in 1/8 of an inch. It's no problem since I can still insert and remove the dowels freely. None the less I will try to correct it by heating with oxy ace.

One thing I could have done is to bevel the butt joint piece too. The welds would have looked better.

Working with not so ideal junk metals pose a lot of problems but a lot of opportunities to learn too. As a newbie I don't expect all to go well at once but I always keep the thought that sooner or later things will improve as I gain more experience and practice.
