Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
is it affected by the previous process? re: not clamping the metal?
dont worry, you can correct that thru oxy ace hehehe

@ryobi,
yup, we need this after our welding work 🙂

Something's not right. If I remove the spacer the flat bars close in 1/8 of an inch. It's no problem since I can still insert and remove the dowels freely. None the less I will try to correct it by heating with oxy ace.

Yes, it was an amateur's mistake. Anyway what's good about metal is you could heat it and bend it easily.

My problem now is technique on how to remove that 1/8 inch closing gap.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
you can put spacer and clamp it, then reheat, see if it works 🙂

Re: Welding Newbie

They say that if you want to shrink metal you can heat it then cool it down abruptly. I can heat the top part near the welded spacer and then put a wet rug on top of the metal to cool it down quickly. Lets see if it pulls the flat bar to compensate for the 1/8 in bow. However I will full weld all remaining joints first before I tackle the bow.

Re: Welding Newbie

how about soaking in oil? i think wet rug will just melt down...hehe

Re: Welding Newbie

I think I just solved the bow without the need to heat. I added another spacer. Now the bar distances are within planned clearance.

Just need to be careful when I weld this that no unwanted movements occur again.

Re: Welding Newbie

good thing that it was corrected by adding another space, it also add stability and strenght.

you can clamp the metal with spacer on the other end (or temporary weld it with other metal). weld tack the 4 outer sides then weld the inside part to prevent unwanted movement. let the heat dissipate before removing the clamp 🙂

If you notice the spacer, that one has the 16mm hole and is suppose be be in the middle. Probably won't be needed as the setup is strong already. Anyway it can always be added if a need arise since the handle is removable.

Yes. The heat dissipation part you mention is very IMPORTANT.

I also notice the 3/32 rods are easier to use. Just need to move more slowly. 6011 is a bastard but can be tamed using a DC welder.

Re: Welding Newbie

Look at the handle. Maybe it's just me getting the habit and feel from using wrenches but I prefer a slight angle compared to a straight line handle.

Yes. Just like in a wrench pull. I feel more comfortable starting with an angle.

Re: Welding Newbie

Hey Jay!!
Congratulations man ! Administrator ka na nga pala.
Can't find anyone more fitting for the post. More power dre !

My own bad experience is full welding a entire length of 2 meters flatbar to an angular, then quit for the day, was horrified the following day when i found the mid section curved-in almost an inch, grabe.

Next time, I wud probably spot weld in alternating equally divided sections, before going back to full welding. But still need to cool down every now and then so the continuous heat wud not accumulate to an undesirable point. ....Perhaps that's the reason... kaya mga welder sa talyer, panay and buhos ng tubig sa bawat pagtigil nila... what do you think? 😮

Hey Clayfigure!
Cant wait for you to finish your grinder/Cut-off project. Had that in my dreams for some time na.

Then the large sheet bender shud come in handy next, shud take atleast gage 18 or 16. 😉

Start na kayo ng new threads mga amigos! 😉

Re: Welding Newbie

just want to ask, do you guys have an idea what do they call the welding rod for "pundidong bakal"? 'coz I brought the plate of my drill press to a welding shop after it got cracked, and they guy said he needs a rod for that. But when I got to the hardware store, they dont know what it is. TIA

Bro, the best repair for that crack is oxy-acetelyn. Preheat and fill it up.

But if you need a welding rod for cast iron, you need to buy Volta brand rods, they have a rod designed for that purpose. kinda hard to find. But, I think it only runs in DC welders. (one of the reason I didn't but the rod)
