Re: Welding Newbie

One thing I learned about metal working is that it's not all about laying bead welds only. It requires fabrication work as well.

Initial lesson learned from this bender WIP is to treat hot metal movement with respect. Bevel and tack weld as much side as possible. Clamp the work securely and let it cool down before dismantling the setup.

Hopefully the habit of taking the time to secure the pieces will subsequently filter on to WIPs requiring more precision work.

In the absence of an ADH I use 7024 rods for now because these are easier to use.

Re: Welding Newbie

@Ossie / eto take 2 .... sa ibang side naman.

Medyo uneven travel speed at inconsistent side to side rod movement pa. Practice talaga kailangan ......

Masters please comment to help improve the weld.

Second to the last setting on welder - around 175 Amp

Re: Welding Newbie

Finished the Base braces without any movement issues. 🙂

Ok na to. As a newbie I'm not expecting much for now specially that I don't have an ADH. I can't see what I'm welding that clearly.

I expect the start welds on edges to improve with an ADH.

What's important is this is almost a bender that will be useful to me. I just need to fix the crappy welds on the handle and make a stand for the base to wrap it up.

@jay,
the "take 2" is much nicer than the first attempt on the frame assembly, and knowing its a horizontal weld position. you are almost there na hehe all we need is practice, be comfortable and relax while welding. using different rod has also different approach and style on welding. constant practice will improve our welding skills.

Re: Welding Newbie

Just an update, just got my drill press plate welded. I finally bought 1 weld stick for the pundidong bakal at one of the several hardware shops here at our place, and he's the only one selling it. And I can't complain on the price (it's 140pesos per stick!:eek:). It's a good thing the welder only needs 1 stick. Thanks again guys.

Pretty pricey, but I bet your satisfied...

Anyway, what's the brand name of the electrode.

Re: Welding Newbie

It's working now if clamped to the mini table. I could actually try to make it pretty but I reckon I already got all the things I wanted so will leave it as it is. I specifically wanted to know all the capabilities of the cutting tools, the boring tools and the grinders with their different attachments as well as the oxy ace (for use on weld washing) . The welder and the welding hood I have known are crappy even before I purchased these.

It's useless to waste more grinding materials ( have some carbide burrs ) now so will just build a stand and be done with.

Here are some more pics.

I'll wait for my ADH first before doing some serious welding. Meantime I will join you in the hunt for the best bang for the buck DC stick welder available locally.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
hows the bender? did you find it easy to bend the metal?
now, bending metal is fun 😀

Yes for thinner flat bars its piece of cake. This is what I would be bending mostly. However I can bend even up to 2 1/4" wide 1/2" thick flat bars with this jig if I add heat to the equation.

Now it's accessories building time. Have you researched some already?

Re: Welding Newbie

hahaha this will make you busy. You and Ryobi will definitely flood this thread with lots of pictures of your builds 😀 which is good hehe

are you ok during weekdays for tool hunting? anyone from PBB (pinoy bakal boys) wants to join? hehe

Re: Welding Newbie

yup Jarod, threaded inserts are for wood, will not work well on other materials. the inserts are oftem made of zinc and will easily break with little pressure. will not weld well also...

Re: Welding Newbie

Guys, while there isn't a dedicated section for metalworking, I do suggest you break the to the intended topic. bender making and evrything about it can be in another thread of its own. it will get better visibility. mahirap mag-backread on a very long thread only to look for a specific item. So please start new threads with new wips or projects. everything a welding newbie needs can stay here...
cheers all

Re: Welding Newbie

noted master 🙂 will do...

@PBB,
All About Metal Bender thread is now created. we can now start to post pictures, builds, question etc specific to Metal Bender there.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
here's the soapstone/chalkstone(SS/CS) we bought last week at your favorite metal store.
my BKM(Best Known Method) on how we can save by not rubbing the SS/CS in sandpaper or to any rough surface to make it thinner.

cutting the SS/CS into half using hacksaw blade:

and, its now thin and ready for action 😀

@ryobi,
i forgot to mention that you also need this SS/CS in your builds 🙂 Php5 /piece.
