Re: Welding Newbie

if you are going to compare the Nihonweld brand to other rod, continous ang arc nya at di nagpuputol putol and mas matipid gamitin.

you can try the generic 2.5mm rod and nihon 2.5mm i gave you, and see whats the difference 🙂

I tried the Nihon rods you gave me. I noticed that the welds looks more shiny. It's as if they use a better filler rod.

That mod should take care of caster durability issue. 🙂

^Oh I see, why SMAW? Cheapness and availability? For all I know, I thought you guys were going MIG or TIG.

In a nutshell, what would be the pros and cons between AC and DC stick?

Lots of info on this on the web. However will try to do one " by experience comparison" when I get chance to own a DC Inverter Welder. Aside from the smoother arc my main concern is the 40% power savings using the inverter DC. Ang mahal ng kuryente and bills pile up if you do a lot of welding. 🙂

@ossie: Those are the projects I've been dreaming to do!!!

Yep Jay, I tried a lot of reading as well that's why I was intrigued on the real hands-on "philippine setting" usage.

In stick DC, can the normal outlet be enough now to handle the Amp requirement?

Yes . Normally that's 12 ga in the household lines.

When talking about branded welders like Lincoln, Miller and the like, the specs are what they say it is. This is not true with a lot of Chinese welders. For this reason you really have to go out and check for yourself the unit build and materials used, performance and handling before buying one.

Sooner or later I hope you get one too Timb. Even woodworkers can use one from time to time for fabricating other support stuff. The new DC inverter welders take out a lot of the hassles. Normal power cables and outlet, lightweight and from my initial testing easier to use.

Thanks Jay, as the provision of another power line is the major turn off for me in AC welding.

Re: Welding Newbie

Thanks Jay, as the provision of another power line is the major turn off for me in AC welding.

If you're going for it then better to skip the 4.5K AC welder and go direct to a 13.5K DC welder. I ran into costly cabling issues with my AC welder. IIRC around 4-5K installing a dedicated 100A feeder line, 50A breaker system and corresponding outlet and plugs plus a 10m gauge 10 power extension. For me it doesn't really matter because I have other plans for the line ( like bigger compressor etc.. ). But for 13.5K I think the DC welder is a better choice. You can bring it anywhere there's regular 220V outlet and start welding. Rest of the initial high cash outlay you can make it up in power savings compared to an AC welder.

Re: Welding Newbie

Is that the case with DC welders? I was already estimating the amount it would cost to add dedicated breakers in the workshop and at the garage..hmmm makes the DC quite enticing..
