Re: Welding Newbie

Sooner or later I hope you get one too Timb. Even woodworkers can use one from time to time for fabricating other support stuff. The new DC inverter welders take out a lot of the hassles. Normal power cables and outlet, lightweight and from my initial testing easier to use.

I really would like to have one Jay, but at the current situation, I hardly have time and money for anything else.
it is a good thing that I have friends like you 😀 makes owning a welding outfit less needed... :p

Re: Welding Newbie

thanks Jay for the info.

at least we have now an idea of making a bender die based on the cylindrical tool steel diameter you posted 🙂

Re: Welding Newbie

I'm thinking that for the larger ones 2" inches might be too high. How about say 4" diameter x 1" only.

Looks like drilling 14mm holes into 2" of tool steel will be a challenge for my bench top drill press. We'll try one and if not successful we can send these to be bored using a milling machine.

There is a tool which can find the center point in cylindrical objects. I will go check it out when I go to Binondo.

It's called a Center square and is around P725.

For DIY here are some samples.

@Ossie, what angle bar did you use for your stand? Do you also have an estimate total length of the angle bars and round bars used?

I'm just trying to do some material costing, thanks!

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
yes you can use 1 inch thick and 4 inch diameter, but 2 inch thick is much better 🙂

the center square tool is really nice, you can easily find its center in a matter of seconds, you dont like to make one DIY? hehehe

Here are some Spanish Made Grip On Welding Pliers.

Aluminum Alloy U Clamp

Convex jaws have a groove designed to hold small diameter round objects. This tool is specially useful near a bench grinder.

Ossie,

Cylindrical Tool Steel ( 2" long )

2.0 = 66
2.5 = 116
3.0 = 217

OZ , do we need all the above sizes. I just added up and it's already more than 1K. 😮

How about squares? I forgot to ask if they have solid square tool steel.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
Php1k is too much to spend to, how about 2", 3' and 4" diameter?

if you are going to use square bar as your dowel for bending?

better yet to find bigger square bar around 2" and drill a hole in the center for your dowel 🙂

havnt tried square bar as a center forming dowel to bend stiff bend, i think its possible, lets try hehe

gogogo Jarod, looking forward to see your builds hehehe

Re: Welding Newbie

Got some quality spare supplies for the cutting tools to try.

Makita 14" abrasive wheel. Made in Japan P180 ( advised by one contractor for me to get Makita - less blade deflection during deep cuts )

Tyrolit 4" Premium Grinding Disk P88 - allegedly Made in Austria

Looks like this is thicker at 6mm.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
i tried tyrolit 4 inch (cutting) once for Php80 and will not try it again, i thought using that disc will be much more cheaper as it clamed to be(matagal daw mapudpod and also for stainless use) by compare to what im using - bosch/dewalt disc. its the same performance to bosch/dewalt as per my experience 🙂
