Re: Welding Newbie

second time:

need more practice using 7018 😀

How come the porosity? Did you heat up the rod first ( oven would be great if available ) .

Set the welder to very low amp and then stick the rod to ground. No arc but it will heat up the rod prior to welding.

Re: Welding Newbie

My soon to be Electric Cord Reel wall mount.

This is what happens when one does not practice welding. Ugly welds.

I found out that my welds are not the same in appearance as when the rod is still long and when it comes to around half length. The absence of an ADH is also not helping get better looking welds.

This one was when the rod was shorter already.

Need more practice, practice and perfect practice ......

I'll grind these and cap off the welds. Although the grinder is a solution it is not meant to be used that way. First off it consumes electricity, disk and most important, time. Welds need to look good when laid down first time to avoid unnecessary grinding. For now I'm still in the newbie section so am still allowed to use the grinder for patching up .... LOL 🙂

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,
yup the rod for stainless is really smooth, its like you are using DC welder 🙂

about 7018, i used the rod straight from sealed storage. i did test the rod in scrap metal first before i weld that metal. i observed that porosity resulted on the end part, maybe i need to remove the rod quickly when ending the welds, (resulted to bubbles???) i dont know, i need to research or someone here can shed some light 🙂

thanks for the advise re: heating the rod, thats new to me hehe

I guess you better take this to weldingweb.com to get better answers. Porosity is a weld defect. Always good to get some insights from pros there.

Re: Welding Newbie

hahaha you are not alone 😀
when im using new rod stick which is long, what i do is weld the metal slowly as possible 🙂

Re: Welding Newbie

This is the crappy swivel I'm trying to replace.

I need a hole in the flat bar to insert the "?".

Re: Welding Newbie

I drilled a hole in the center so as to make the oxy ace cut easier. Could have drilled it in the perimeter of the circle but I intend to use the center for practice first before I cut the hole.

The secret to drilling metal is to drill at very low speed. For this reason I prefer an air drill.

I also punched holes on the perimeter of the circle as my guide. Probably a pro would not do this anymore.

Will fire up the torch and see what happens.

Re: Welding Newbie

Setting up the oxy ace for the cut job.

1/4" flat bar material

Proper cutting tip size is a Victor 00 ( depending on torch manufacturer ). 20-25psi Oxygen and 3-5 psi Acetylene.

It's good practice to make sure the tip holes are clean prior to usage.

Re: Welding Newbie

A hole saw would have made my life easier. None the less the oxy ace cut was done. Setting up the equipment consumed more time.

A little help from the die grinder and I was able to insert the swivel fab.

Dry fit before welding time.
