Re: Welding Newbie

update on a would be weekend welding newbie...
went to panda yesterday to finally acquire the needed tools for this purpose...it took me long though.
got the jackson autodarkening helmet instead of the cheaper chiwanese one (the jackson is anyway also made in china:eek:). i dont know but my conscience rooted on the jacksons..hoping i did not make any mistake on the purchase of the greater evil.

i should recommend that before you buy your ac, mig or tig welders..you should buy yourself some good eye protection first and not the other way around.

and of course, the badly needed vise..i only got myself the 4" swivel base quick release

Record..the few remaining ones still made in the UK.

please help me decide where to put this vise..i am planning to make (or ask somebody) to weld me a stand made of angle bars..any recommendation on the correct height and thickness of the angle bars? many thanks in advance.

Re: Welding Newbie

and of course what type of (number and brand) of welding rod to use to weld these angle bars for the base...is 6013 suited for this?

calling the supermasterwelder...hehehe

Re: Welding Newbie

Good tool choice V. I suggest you start with Nihon special 6013 3/32 rods. Easier to burn and to strike an arc.

In the absence of a proper welding table ( as of now) I don't know how I'm going to fabricate and weld most of my DIY stuff without this mini table

Setup approved by my Master Guest welder.

Re: Welding Newbie

Today I fabricated the brackets for my air hose reel swivel

OT:

I have had good luck with US Made tools but there are exceptions such as this oiler. Try the local made Eagle. It is the best I have used so far and available at Ace hardware. IMHO much superior in quality and performance.

Re: Welding Newbie

that mini but heavy duty table looks sturdy to handle most if not all DIY metal works.
but i cant really squat to do these works nowadays..is a 3"x 3/16" thick angle bars ok enough?maybe visit the local scrap yard.
thanks

I could easily elevate the mini table if I wanted to by making some legs ( pyramid style ).

Try junk shops or your local metal supplier for materials. Now a days I prefer to buy new metal. Less fabrication preparation and cleanup.

What design idea do you currently have in mind for the Vise Stand? Do you want movable or stationary?

Re: Welding Newbie

i will try the junk shops first..if they are wanting and would pressure me to find my materials then ill head to the legit hardwares...how can you spot a bad (hard to weld) metal from a good one? nowadays the small hardwares are flooded with cheap angle bars but to my surprise they were hard to weld...aserado daw ito..kaya mahirap i weld..any brand you might want to recommend?

and also where can i get the good Nihonweld rods?I do not know if the hardwares in Pasay Edsa store them.

id prefer a semi mobile support stand sana..i.e. just plain angle bars, four corners, braced on top and at the midsection.

New Tennesse Hardware in Taft Ave ( nearing Edsa ) have Nihon Weld Rods as most hardware stores.

The angle bars will be fine. Just prep the material well using wire brush / grinding disc or flap disc before welding. It will make the process go smoothly.

As for the vise stand maybe a 4 feet setup using angle bars, square tubes or even pipes. It will make it more sturdy which is a must if to be used for metal fabrication.

Try search www.weldingweb.com for more vise stand ideas.
