Re: Welding Newbie

@masters,

before i proceed with this welding thing...is my set up safe?
fused 60amp line with loomex (duplex) g14 wire to be hooked up with a 300A arc welder?
thanks!

i hate fires like all of you.

Is that an AWG 14 wire? For 300A maybe minimum should be at least AWG 10. This is the cable size I use for my 200A welder. 50A breaker.

Re: Welding Newbie

Yes doc V the amperage setting for the fuse is just fine but the awg 14 wire is not, iinit ang alambre mo, better you use the # 10 stranded wire, that's the standard and safe size of wiring needed to stay safe against wire overheating.

Kaya nga niyang kargahin kahit 100 amp fuse.

Re: Welding Newbie

sorry wala akong pics. but early today i prepped my welding gear.

i managed to make a metal support for the airconditioning unit.

one thing id like to ask sa mga welding masters..requirement ba na magkadikit two materials before welding? pag ba may gap na 2-3mm? ala kasi ako chopsaw but i managed to at least dimension them to size with a the grinder fitted with a cutting disc..(i use johnson elektrik pala 45pesos/pc, thin type for stainless and steel).

yes masarap magwelding..with the helmet..pero me mishap..hindi ako nagsuot ng proper gear for the foot..one foot 1.5" angle bar fell on my toe nail, it broke the nail and bled profusely...i tell you its so painful..naka tsinelas lang ako..i forgot to wear my counterfeit crocs! buti na lang i have first aid kits to treat events related to stupidity...now i dont think i can wear shoes for one week...another good excuse not to report for work! yeeeeee!

imagine, the mishap happened just 30 minutes after i started cutting the angle bars..do you think that prevented me from continuing? naaah! i stopped just before 4 pm..i painted the support red (RJ acrylic spray paint)..i will install it tomorrow.

lesson painfully learned.but i am quite happy with the results.i am a certified welding newbie!

Re: Welding Newbie

@doc,
you need to wear proper protection at all times. you need to wear closed toe foot wear or much better to wear safety shoes, especially when grinding, welding or even lifting heavy things. what im using is safety sneaker i posted to other thread (safety gear thread) much lighter compare to steel toe shoes. its better safe than sorry hehehe we have no spare foot or finger in Panda or even branded spare for that hehehe

usually a gap of 2 - 2.5mm is good enough as the rod will penetrate more, try to clean the metal before welding, bevel the edge is also advisable if you are using thick metal.

ang ganda ganda ng camera tapos walang mga pictures? 😮 hehehe

Re: Welding Newbie

@oz,

of course i know the proper protection and been chiming in that thread you or the other guys made regarding proper attire but today was simply became a careless day and excitement ruled over sanity.waah!

kaya pala less smoke (mabango pa nga ang smoke nya!), less spatter and continuous ang "burning" (whatchamacollit?) kaya lang pag 3mm na ang gap, nanggigigil nako maubos yung rod para ma fil up yung gap. i ended up melting the metals leaving a much more wider gap!!!!

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

thanks supermaster!

but i know i cannot make good looking beads with my welder...at least nagdikit ang mga bakal at hindi ko sya matanggal! effective pala ang welding! hehehehehehehehehe

(nasobrahan yata ako ng singhot ng usok ng special 6013!)

Re: Welding Newbie

@doc,
hahaha you will experience that as a newbie, ending up melting the metal hehe so practice and practice and practice...

and, use mask and electric fan to stay away the smoke... enjoy burning metals 😀

hope this helps, from millerwelds.com:

Shellfish can make you a better welder. Simply think about [COLOR="blue"]CLAMS: Current setting, Length of arc, Angle of electrode, Manipulation of the electrode and Speed of travel. If you're just learning the Stick process, technically called Shielded Metal Arc Welding, remembering these five points will improve your welding technique.

@kabasor,
join ka na po dito, need your expert advise here hehe

Re: Welding Newbie

Hi doc V, so sorry for your mishap while doing your first metal project, I guess that's just natural for welding newbies, they get so excited to start doing welding but forgetting wearing safety gears. Dumaan din ako sa ganyan, welding metal and forgetting sometimes wearing the gloves or having a pliers beside to pick up or turn the metal. Before due to excitement I woudl turn the metal or pick it up with my bare hands and what do I get ?, burned fingers or palm. :eek::p

Don't rush your metal projects, forget first posting WIPs, what sana I want you to do is give yourself a day for just practicing your welding beads, if you can buy some MS plates with size 4" x 8" with 3/16 in thickness, you can practice your bead welding on one plate, then on another plate you can practice continues horizontal application. Punuin mo back to back surface of the metal plates.

Another way to practice is to buy scrap square bars, then cut them up to a length of 6" or 8", then with the two pieces of the square bars pag dikitin mo yung dalawang gilid or kanto lengthwise making a sort of beveled edge, tack weld in both ends then there you can practice your penetration, root pass and then lastly your capping. Do this procedure for several time so you'll get use to welding the beveled square bar.

Doc V, to get used to welding, continues practice, practice, practice and practice pa rin, that's what they do in a formal training school specially for beginners in SMAW. 😉

---------------------------

Thru continues practice you will learn your mistakes and how to weld right. Have fun welding and don't forget your safety gears always.
