Re: Welding Newbie

@all,

yes practice is all that i need...mahirap pa din i maintain yung gap while moving the rod to form the arc...i need hand control..ok lang ba dalawang kamay to hold the rod holder while beading? yun welder ko pala 230A, sa II lang ako nakaset kasi parang masyadong malakas sa III...hanggang V ang setting niya.

chop saw is ideal talaga for perfect cuts...but no plans yet of getting one...angle grinder na lang muna.

Power Hack Saw yun. Meron akong nakita na ganoon sa malapit sa Panda. Mas maliit pero super bigat. Made in China.

OO band saw yan. Yung abrasive chop saw pang rough cut lang talaga. Daming spark, ang baho at madumi ang dust .... hehehhehehe

Re: Welding Newbie

HEY DOC V,

If you are cutting small steel for small projects or maybe small flat bars why don't you try purchasing a grinder stand first where you can attach your Makita angle grinder and use it as a mini chop saw, it will be more convenient and easy for you in cutting your square bars, round bars or flat bars accurately.

You can get in touch with our co member pyth, he sells one and its really not expensive, that is if you are interested. He even gives a 5% discount on sulit or PHM members.
Here is the link :
http://www.sulit.com.ph/index.php/view+classifieds/id/3481840/Angle+Grinder+Stand

Doc V, just like what I've said on your practice plate, you can practice your beads one at a time, make rows of welding beads, its as if gumagawa ka ng several round periods na naka helera, give each welding bead about 3 to 4 seconds then go to the next bead and then the next and the next until the plate is filled with small welding beads, and maybe by then you will feel how to adjust the gap of the tip of the rod to the plate to produce a good arc, talagang ganyan practice at practice pa rin.

OK lang to use two hands for better control of the welding rod holder in making your beads until na masanay ka na sa one hand welding. Kung masyadong malakas ang dikit ng welding rod sa square bar e di reduce your amperage setting then test again striking the rod to your welding project if its easier to control.

Re: Welding Newbie

This must be the aserado angle bars Doc V is talking about. I paid only 280 pesos for a 20 foot lenght 1" x 1" x 3/16". Malutong and the metal texture shows it.

Anyway for what I wanted to do it was ok but probably not for other stuff. Just a wall mount for the voltage stabilizer.

Re: Welding Newbie

@jay,

safe na safe yung voltage regulator ah! 😎

did you use expansion bolts to fix it?
i was having problems the other day when i used same diameter masonry drill bit as the expansion bolt.the hole was relatively loose.i need a bit a tad smaller than the bolt itself to get the perfect fit.not loose and not tight.

Just plastic torx and hex screws since the load is very light.

I use 5/16 expansion bolts for the heavier stuff. The drill bit I use is an Irwin Joran 13mm. I blow the holes with compressed air before installing the bolts. Exacto talaga.

Re: Welding Newbie

this a/c bracket was made weeks ago and sorry for posting it late..i just took the pictures today..nothing to do with a nasty migraine..no woodwork or anything but i just wanted to make something productive and that is to share what i did as a welding newbie.

i regret no having taken a photo during the welding process..painted it red with no grinding straight from the welding...hehe..kindly comment on the joinery...sorry me paint na kasi...ang dumi kasi ng kamay ko to get the camera pa and take some shots..maybe next time po.

and this is my welder...

forgive the welder brand but it is working fine..hehe..at least for a newbie like me.

Re: Welding Newbie

btw maybe you have noticed the translucent gluey material on some surface of the angle bars...its silicone po...i weatherproofed the perimeter of the bracket but letting some areas open for water drainage..

now the a/c needs another bracket for the canopy.

and i dont know when i could make it.

Re: Welding Newbie

Bro,

Are you dragging the electrode instead of weaving it in semi circle while cuddling the weld puddle. Ossie showed me once how to weave in semi circle and since then I get more consistent weld beads.

Travel time ( too fast ?) and arc gap not yet so consistent but almost there. This results in burn through holes more often than not.

My style now is still dragging because I still cannot maintain the consistency of an arc gap. Travel time I have somehow controlled a bit. Due to this I use 7024 rods most of the time. I don't have to worry about arc gap. Just stick it in with no gap and drag it or weave in semi circle.

Available in Toolec Libis under the brand name Cigweld.

If welding metals w a slight gap I usually try to bridge it first with a piece of stripped down welding rod or wire. Usually needing at least two passes to fill in to slightly above flush level for grinding later.

If there is too much spatter then you know you're coming in too hot. Reducing amperage usually works out.

Please pardon me if what I commented are not true for you. I just based this on what I experienced and without formal welding education or training on my part so I could be wrong.
