Looking for ideas on a small footprint welding table.

Currently what I have are 2 pcs 20ft 2" x 2" 2.0mm square tubes.

No plans drawn yet but am leaning at something with wheels and can be moved easily.

Top would be minimum 1/4" thick plate and probably max 5/16 depending on cost factors.

2 feet x 3feet ung table and 30inc.H and ung wheel caster 2 inc.

I was surprised how maneuverable the mig cart I just build is. It must have something to do with the bigger 8" rear wheels. I wonder if it would be better to use the same 2 bigger wheels and 2 casters setup for a heavy welding table as well. I was looking over the net for builds and seems that 4 casters was the norm ... most of the ones I saw use this setup.

the two-wheel and two-cater config is good for pivoting just like as any push cart would need in turning. If you need the same flexibility the same could apply but if you want more dexterity on the table's part, a four-caster config may suit you more.

It depends on how you will be moving your working table.

I also have plans to build a chop saw stand. However I'm thinking if I can integrate the chop saws to the table then maybe I save space and less expenses. Say ... the Bosch Abrasive saw on the bottom for quick cuts and the Makita on a side table attachment for fit ready cuts.

In this scenario probably the table should be able to move 360 degrees with ease. Looks like an all casters setup would be better.

I' not sure yet if this is a really good idea.

What's a good table top overhang .... say 2"?

I already have prepared the space where it will be stored after use in the garage. 🙂

Bro JayL,

Usually its 3" overhang for the table top all around but if one side will be positioned against the wall then its 3" only on the sides and front. Purpose of this 3" overhang is for clamping space for C-Clamps and other clamping mechanisms.

May I suggest Jay for two pieces of 2 X 3 X 1/2", so that's a 24" X 36" X 1/2" per panel, now if you get two and set them side by side, you get a 36" X 48" table top, I think that space will be enough already for you to work on your metal fabs, very spacious na yan !! 😉

If ever you decide on this set up of 36" X 48" table top, huwag mo silang totally pagdikitin, leave a space of about 3/4" or 1" in the middle, this gap will serve you as a slot for your table clamps that can be positioned back and forth or wherever it will need to be positioned. :rolleyes:

Bro Jay, a 26" X 48" table top size is no joke to lift, my table top panels measuring 21"X 40"X 1/2" has a weight of 45 plus kgs each, and I have 4 four panels for the table top which will also have slots between each panel for clamps to be positioned when needed. :p 🙂

Thanks for the info Bro. .. I'll have to find really good casters for this table. Better sturdy and safe. It will also be loaded with tools in the bottom and for starters probably 2 chop saws.

The 36" width will not pass the door leading to the storage place where the table will rest when not in use. Looks like I'm limited to 28".

If I make the overhang 3" per side then the base will measure 20" x 42" .... do you think the 20" will be narrow?

Maybe a plywood with metal sheet can suffice for a flat and burn proof surface to lay down and assemble metal for spot welds.

Yes it will ... as evident on what I had used to build my cart. However problems arise when full welding and the parts are clamped to the table. Warping / distortion can occur because the wood with metal sheet is not strong enough to counter the metal contraction when welds cool down. For this clamping reason thicker table top plates are usually preferred.
