Metal Drawers building ... woodworker style.

This is an inefficient way to build metal drawers but I make do with what tools I have. Dulls the metal blade faster, consumes more gas , wire , electricity , grinding consummables and time.

A sheet metal press brake is the tool to fab if lots of drawers are to be made ... say if building a toolbox.

14 gauge sheet metal. No need for stiffeners. A lot sturdier than the commercially available drawers built with thinner sheets. A whole 4' x 8' 1/8" sheet metal cost approximately less than 2.5K.

Any imperfections would be hidden by paint. Powder coating if available still even better.

The slides I have are long ... will save these for later. I'll just fab a frame using 3/16" angle bars to ride the drawers.

So much easier to fab stuff with a proper welding table ( even if the top is not yet fully flat )

I'll just grease the bars later so the drawers will slide easier ... maybe a couple of 100 grit flap disc runs to make the railing smooth as well

A bit tedious to build but cheaper than good quality slides.

Lower frame ....

I'll put a plate on the middle part to stiffen the frame. It is also meant for storing a part of the welding positioner.

Gawa pa kaya ako ng isang frame for the top. Tapos sandwhich ko yung drawers .... or overkill na ito ... Lagyan ko na lang ng paa tapos weld ko na sa lower table frame. Mas mahirap nga lang mag align.

Look Ma ...... no more warping ... Why? ... because I'm not fascinated by the welding arc anymore that I want to full weld everything .. I now just give it the necessary short welds at strategic locations

Top frame dry fit ... this is not suppose to be the drawers mounting if I had the right slides ... but this is cheaper ... cost me less than 300 pesos in metals used

Looks like I don't have to flip the table to mount these lower drawers

I'll install the drawers this side of the table ... easier to access

Not much storage but still is space maximized ...

One other reason why I did not go for slides anymore is because I want to be able to pull the drawers out and carry these elsewhere during a wip progress ...

nice work, I do hope you left space for your foot not to get pinched, also I hope you still have a good back, I hate leaning down so low since my back ain't as good as it were...
will you be putting wheels on the drawers so you can roll them everywhere? :bike3:

You're right about the back Timb ... the air tools would be the ones most used so I'd probably just pull out the drawer and lay this on the tool cart during wips .....

other drawer not used as much as it's only storage for new consumables ...

I reckon the foot well is enough space but there is still around 3.5" clearance from drawer base to ground.

I did some final grinding so the drawers will slide in and out smoothly ...

If you have at least a 2 HP belt driven compressor then an air die grinder is a good tool to get. Very versatile for close quarters grinding. Not all die grinders are made equal so choose one that is efficient. Means it does not consume a lot of air for the work it is doing.

All clamped up and ready for welding

Out of position .... low clearance overhead welding ... a creeper will be a good tool ... for mobility and ease of operator positioning

here the drawers are installed ... I used the small space in the middle to store the shafting for the welding positioner .. i need a hole saw now to bore a hole in the middle of the table flooring so the positioner mini table can sit flush during storage ... I don't use it very often but it comes real handy when I fab small stuff like bobbin hooks for motorcycle paddock stands etc .....

I also installed this hook for hanging the ground cable ... next I will be fabricating a bolt in option for the table grounding with quick disconnect to either the mig or stick welder.

Cut and tap a scrap to use for the table grounding connection ...

cleaned the metal surface where i will weld it ...

drilled a hole and decided to tap it as well

I will buy a 1.5m welding cable from LYS hardware size 1/0 and an eyelet connector for this ...

I don't have the needed male quick disconnect yet so this one has to wait ...

I hope this welder still works ... I have not powered it on since I got my mig welder

or I can temporarily disable one of these ground clamps to get the connector and transfer it to the table ... male Tweco Connector
