Re: Welding Table

AHRRRRGGGHHH !!!, GRRRRRRRR !!! Have to re type this reply again, PHM website is again faultering, on and off, off-line, on line, then off-line again, then again its on line ones more.

Anyway bro JayL, that table of yours is becoming a very versatile, useful and functional welding table build.

But I do have some apprehensions here regarding the hanging of your grinders on a bar welded to the table legs. Correct me if I am wrong but I have read in a forum regarding welding tables and a question was raised like would'nt be the angle grinders be affected by the current flowing to the ground wirings and to the whole of the table, and then possibly ground the motors.

Well in my case whether there is some truth to it or not, I have manage to place my angle grinders on another table while welding, just to play safe.

Just sharing this info and might be of help to you

Re: Welding Table

Possibly bro because the outlets I'm using are not grounded.

To be safe I can actually place the grinders on the tool cart when these are plugged in and then just use the bar for grinder storage after working.

nice observation brader... baka tinatangal ni Jay yung mga grinders pag nagweweld sya....:burn:paano nga ba Jay?

Re: Welding Table

Till this post by Bro Rosy I just leave the grinders hanging on the table bar while working. So far I have not noticed any grounding problems with the grinders.

Re: Welding Table

Well I guess this is something to think about too since in one response to the inquiry was that it somehow affects the motor little by little since the entire welding table is totally grounded while welding on the table top.

But come to think of it true or not, why take a chance and let our grinders slowly be disabled unknowingly. Maybe, but maybe you can fabricate again a permanent free standing angle grinder rack with four wheel casters which can easily be moved around the shop when the need arises.

Suggestion lang naman toits bro Jay. You can weld some 1 1/2" X 2" tugulars, make a rectangular frame of about 24" in width X 60" in height, and on that frame you can weld some flat bars where you can hang your grinders permanently when not in use or after each project is done. Now to make it stand, you can cut 2 pcs of excess tubulars maybe 20" in lenght, then weld them under the base of the frame, making some sort of letter H figure, add some support at the front and back then add also some casters for easy movement of the rack. 😉 🙂 OH ! you can even weld several metal hooks on the sides of the frame for some tools to be hanged

If there is no need for this then scrap it. Exploration lang of the mind for an unwanted scenario for our grinders. 😡
Maybe you can think of another alternative to address this possible scenario.

Re: Welding Table

Can't you just put some insulating material where the grinders hang so that it won't be affected by the ground?

Re: Welding Table

Yes bro moji, it is so possible but I have been thinking of that for my table if ever I start working on it but the problem is the flat bars where the grinders will be hanged will thicken and might not fit in between the body and the grinding guard. Do you have any idea or alternative material like hard plastic or whatever to replace the flat bar that are welded to the table so that the metal parts of the angle grinders will not be indirect contact withe the welding table. I was thinking before of using maybe wood like 1/2" X 2" to be screwed to the metal but the flat wood might not be able to hold the weight of 2 or 3 grinders when hanged, not so sure yet if it will work or not though.

Re: Welding Table

Im not sure if plastic is a good insulator but if it is then it would work. It can be bought in various thicknesses so grinder clearance won't be a problem.

Re: Welding Table

OH THIS SUDDENLY CROSS MY MIND, I can buy T&G WOOD in hardware store and its width is 6" across (lapad) and possibly attach it to the metal leg/posts of the table by scews or small bolts. Then just shape the top to a thickness where the space between the guard and the body will fit.

But if it will look flimsy then I'll just make me a separate angle grinding movable rack/stand like what I have suggested for Jay.

Re: Welding Table

For me the tool cart is indispensable when working. I'll probably build a new one later but for now maybe I can add some bars to the existing cart to hold the grinders as well as the other tools during a wip progress.

Bro Rosy ... do you still have the link to the forum discussions regarding this grinder grounding subject? tks

Frankly speaking I don't think the grinders will be affected but for me it will be a good idea to move these out of the table. The reason is I can access the lower portion of the table easily for placing clamps in and out when working. It will be more convenient to do this w/o the grinders on the bar.

If there is any truth to this grinder grounding problem then I could have hit two birds in one bullet then. 🙂 No harm to keep the grinders away and safe.

Re: Welding Table

It's a relief and convenience to be able to do metal working in the semi open. Soon this will be the place for my wips.

Conditioning the table for metal primer application

These Makita and Metabo grinders are light years away in safety and performance. The Metabo is equipped with a clutch system. There is no kick back when the wire wheel gets bound in the metal edges. The grinder will respond and control the bind and let you to continue working. On the contrary the Makita will kick back the wheel ( grinder ) away from the metal. Very dangerous thus I do not remove the guard. For the Metabo I am tempted to remove the guard but decided to keep it till I am very well familiar with it already.

Comparison in sound between grinders is analogous to an underbone motorcycle equipped with aftermarket pipes and a Gixer1000 with a Yoshimura racing exhaust system ... LOL

I purchased these gasket scrapers for automotive use but found these handy for other task too such as corners scraping. Lots of these sets available in the market in different brands. Get some ... these will prove to be very useful in a shop. I do sharpen the edges when these get dull.
