Re: Welding Table

jayL,

amazing welds...

suggestion lang,

di ba mas ok na you put primer right after you weld ( cool it first )
best is aerosol rust inhibitor...
para ma stop na yung rust accumulation?

no need to grind,
ready to prime na.
top notch na kasi yung weld mo.

Do you have an aerosol rust inhibitor product brand to suggest?

Re: Welding Table

hanep, pinapakitaan kami ng horizontal welding position hehe mas maganda siguro yung banat mo sa flat position welding... pag maganda camera, gumaganda lalo yung wips hahaha

Oz ... mas ma umbok ng konti yung beads than I wanted these to be. Wire stickout was a bit long. Horizontal mas madali pa. Mahirap yung vertical going uphill and overhead welding. Pag me chance nga lagi kong practice ito.

Magpapalit nga ako ng gas. Gamt ko now 80% argon 20% CO2. Papalitan ko ng 75% Argon / 25% CO2. Naghahanap lang ako ng magandang tank.

Yun kasing 80/20 pam production runs na gas mix.

Re: Welding Table

I added 1 1/2" square tube for added support when I mountl the lower base flooring ....

Grind welds flush ....

Bronco muna ... mas mahirap gawin ito pag assembled na buong frame

Bukas wire cup brushing ..... then cut the legs and assemble the frame

i think i saw an ace brand...
meron din yata sa concorde, but i don't know the brand...

but a brushed epoxy primer will do...
maganda lang pag aerosol, smooth and even ang finish,
bagay na bagay sa type ng welding beads mo...ganda eh !!!

For aerosol primer I buy Bosny but would want to try other forum recommended brands.

Re: Welding Table

Wire brush and wire wheeling na naman ... grabe sa dust

Don't forget your safety gears .... ang dami ng gasgas ng face shield ... yun iba dyan kung anu ano na tumitilamsik ... dapat sa mukha ko sana kung wala yan

My setup .... Twin Makita 4 1/2" grinders. Side switch for long grinding runs and paddle switch for short or burst used mostly for corners.

Grinders are as good only as the consumables loaded. Choose well ( wire wheels / brushes ) and don't skimp ... you will pay more for less vibration and flying wires. I use the above US made Craftsman professional. Very well balanced consumables. However not all Craftsman products are made equal ... this particular models I found only through Garage Journal members' experiences.

Re: Welding Table

My Makita power tools ..... these had served me well ( DIY ) and some are more than 15 years old now. Among Japanese manufacturers Makita is on top of my list. In fact if I can have only one brand of power tools I choose Makita because of their extensive line up and availability locally. Down side is these are expensive thus more often than not are not " the best bang for the peso" in terms of initial investment. However if looking for tools that are built to last longer then Makita is a well respected name.

To me the wood Miter Saw is easier to use although my experience is only on softwood. mdf and plywood.

I cut the welding table legs ....This Makita dry cut saw is moody. It requires a lot of adjustments in feed pressure all along the cut. Variables that determine feed rate pressure include type of blade installed, material thickness , material position to cut , the position of the blade w/ respect to the material, blade teeth entry/cut angle etc...

The thing is if there are lots of sparks then the feed rate is most probably wrong ... LOL

Re: Welding Table

Table frame dry fit ... I consulted a lot of people regarding table height. In the end I settled for 32 inches.

It may seem low considering I'm 5' 8" tall. However my experience with metal Wips is that these tend to grow vertically ( like the cart job ) . If the table top is too high then once the build is on the table the Wip's height becomes a bit more difficult to manage.

I can mount the legs offset outside

or offset inside

Any which way gussets have to be installed to stabilize the legs when the table is fully loaded.

Here's a shot showing the 2 different legs mounting. I prefer not to mount it on the center.
I don't even know yet how to align these legs and keep these aligned when welding ( distortion control ). I don't have 3 axis clamps.

Will probably improvise using 2 x 2 square tubes for clamping supports.

Thinking to reinforce the top frame with 2" by 1/4" thick flat bars before legs installation. The table top has a slight center bow that needs to be corrected thus a rigid top frame is necessary.

The heavier a welding table is the better it is.

Re: Welding Table

I dry fitted the top frame. It can barely contain the table top bow. I need to beef it up ... there is no question now about this in my mind. It needs to be heavier. Working with 1/2" thick plate bow ...

I can probably make distortion work to my advantage. If I beef up the center bar with flat bars on both side I can rely that welding will pull the plate down flush. Depends only which one is stronger ... the plate or the support ..... LOL

The center bow is there. It probably can't be seen in the pic because it's not that tall now because of the clamps. It's convex in nature so it needs to go down some more.

All will be a gamble when the top is welded. It will be the biggest challenge. Probably it can even be sanded down as a last option like in planing a wooden workbench top.

Now what strategy to use. Finish the frame ... put the top and weld upright position under the table.

0r

Weld with the frame on top ... flat position then flip the heavy table.

Building a Mig Cart is child's play compared to a welding table. WIP weight issues.

Talk to the supplier to return the plate. Pay some more money for a new one. Again no guarantee that the next one will be flat.

Is there a company where I can send this plate for pressing?

Go to a pro ( one with deeper metal distortion experience / oxy ace maybe ) to consult or even finish the table top installation .... maybe cheaper in the long run than messing up the top plate or worst comes to worst including the frame.

Re configure the top frame for a cut in half plate install. But then how to cut the plate in half w/o warping again.

Re: Welding Table

Jay, first why not mount the legs center of the wheels, that way the load is spread better than on side always bearing the weight which I think could lead to premature failure. Second the top.... well I do know you want it perfect, why not put the top with the curve pointing upward, weld one side and load the center until you get the desired flatness then weld the other end... or have the metal replaced over and over and over until you spent enough to make another table... or if you really like it flat, you can bring the whole table to your friendly machine shop to have it milled to flatness, but you do have to have it welded in place first...

Re: Welding Table

I can actually push the plate down before welding but I will need a deep reach clamp w/ good pressure. Thinking to fab one for this job .... will see if I can find suitable metal.

The center bow is there probably because I can't push it down unlike the edges where in the c clamps work well.

This job I can only have one shot. If it warps more then plate is ruined.

Thanks for your inputs Timb. I'll keep these in mind when I make a decision on how to tackle the problem.

Re: Welding Table

this imo is the better choice for durability and should make the table easier to move as well....

Yes it does make a lot of sense. Caster wheel center of gravity is hit. I just checked the top frame. Can be done with an addition of a 2" x 1" square tube on the shorter left & right sides ( 2 x 2 is better but I don't have the metal on stock ). We hit 2 birds in one bullet. The top frame gets added strength as well.
