Hi newbie here.

Im trying to find someone who could fabricate and weld the horn ring of my steering wheel. Dami ko na po pinuntahan na welder sabi daw di pwde kasi pundido daw?. Ano ibig sabihin po ba ng pundido? Naka chrome kasi yun tapos naputol. I also need a round bar na pwde ma weld sa frame kasi nawala na rin yun ring. Can you recommend a shop located in mandaluyong kung saan pwde po mag pagawa.

thanks

attached is a sample picture of the horn ring ng steering wheel. The broken frame is seen with the red background.

Re: What is Pundido?

Ang "pundido" po ay cast iron (if i'm correct)...much harder than mild steel pero malutong. Any welding shop can weld that. Mahal nga lang ang welding rod para jan ranging from P120-150 or higher pa per 1 piece of rod.

Re: What is Pundido?

I went to a machine shop. They told me the material is zinc. Any machine shop in manila that can weld a zinc?

Re: What is Pundido?

You can buy cast iron welding rod and use any welding machine for this. The welding rod is about P180/rod.

if you can find a shop that makes or adjusts jewelry by oxy ace welding they can do it. I"ve seen Zinc repairs via oxy/ace torch, you just have to be sure that your material is really zinc. they also might ask you to get zinc at your local junk shop or scrap yard as raw mat for the process you need.

Re: What is Pundido?

Sounds like zamak, which is a trade name for zinc-alloys commonly used in die-cast parts
of ornamental or non-structural purpose.

There's little to no iron in zamak, and generally you cannot weld it (using a welder would
likely destroy the part and subject you to zinc vapor poisoning, symptomized by what are
often called the "zinc shakes": a temporary, mild epilepsy). Your chief recourse is soldering
with more zinc (as alluded to by WillyF) which, aside from the aforementioned health risks,
can turn out very ugly if done by amateurs, defeating most ornamental purposes.

While we're at it... 🙂
"Fundido" is indeed cast iron. It is generally 'softer' than steel, in the sense that it is easier
to drill than most steels; but it is stiffer or more brittle, meaning it resists bending better
before it fails. The high carbon/graphite content of cast iron results in a lubricant property
that severely hampers proper welding. I tried a rod that amboy successfully used to affix
cast ornamentals onto steel framing, but I obtained mixed results: the 'welds' were weaker
than I'd hoped, and some failed under normal use... but then my welds aren't the best on
any given day.

Re: What is Pundido?

thanks for your feedback.

It seems harder than i expected. It's just that this type of wheel horn ring is rare (pre 1972 model) and im hoping to restore it. I will try a jewelry shop if they can solder it. Read in the internet that welding zinc is more delicate and will need a seasoned TIG welder. One needs to find the right temperature/heat. Im not sure if it will be durable when welded.

I will keep you updated for the results if i am successful.
