Let's post our consumables here like grinding & cutting disks, welding rods, gases, welding wires, grinding stones, burrs etc.. so we can compare prices and products and hopefully find the best ones to use.

I'll start with Chop Saw Cutting Disk. I'm halfway through an Bosch and will now load a Makita to see what difference it makes if any. Will report back when enough data is gathered.

Makita 14" abrasive wheel - P180

Notice the difference in material and make.

The Makita is 0.125 inches ( 3.17mm ) thick while the Bosch is 0.118 ( 3mm ) inches. The thicker Makita is expected to put more strain on the Chop Saw motor but if it minimizes blade deflection during cuts then it's fine with me. Cut just with enough constant pressure and let the disk do the work.

Please let me know if you find thin kerf ( 3/32" or 0.0937mm ) 14" abrasive disks in the market .

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

Stainless Steel finishing materials. Got this from my Chinese supplier.

1. Flap Disc 4" #120 - P20
2. Flat Disk 4" #360 - P20
3. Buffing Disk 4" (Gray) - Scotch brite - P45
4. Polishing Disc 4" (Orange/White) - cloth - P35
5. Buffing Stone (Green)

Picture of stainless steel tube T-304 2"dia. with half sphere on the end. Half Sphere is tig welded on tube end then finished with the materials above. Seamless mirror finish.

In my previous work we are using waterproof sandpaper #120, #360 #1000 in substitute on item 1-3, respectively.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

PowerCraft Cutting Disk 4" 1.2mm thk for stainless steel - P33.00
I got it from toolsfromus, edsa-cubao

The thinnest you can get is 1.0 mm thick available in other brand like makita, tyrolit, 3M and metabo

Best for cutting small diameter stainless steel tube and thin sheet metal.

Easy lang. I need to buy angle bars first to probably make the back shelve for the shop or a chop saw stand. Hehehehehe

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

The Makita 14" abrasive wheel is very good but so is Bosch. If I buy again I will just choose the cheaper one between the two.

Deflection during hard cuts can't be avoided or maybe I was just pushing harder. However if I want straighter cuts then I will reload the chop saw with a half consumed wheel ( 7-9" remaining ). Just remember if there is no spark then it's not cutting but just consuming the abrasive wheel. Back off and start again or push a bit harder. Constant feed pressure is essential too.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

Here are some good quality stones. Japanese Mitsu. Rated up to 24,000 rpm.

The rectangular stone is very very hard. It is used to dress up / flatten the stones including those of the bench grinders.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

These are air tool attachments good up to 23,000 rpm.

3 1/2 inch cutting disk. Excellent when cutting clearance is an issue.

These ones below are the local ones. Suitable only for lower speeds up to 4,500 rpm. Best to check speed ratings before using any attachment in order to ensure safety. It is imperative that the attachment rpm ratings match or exceed those of the tools to be used.

Always I will not hesitate to pause and reload a tool with the proper attachment that will be best for the task at hand. It works better, safer and cheaper that way, at least for me.

@jay, all,
do have an idea if how much is Nihon E7018/E6010/E6011 per kilo at your favorite hardware store? thanks

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

Someone's got a box of 3/32" thick 6011's thinking he'd hone his welding chops with it. (Less than 10 sticks consumed.) Turns out his puny welder and noob skills can't handle that sticky rod...

It's been sitting in it's shrink wrapped box with the top open for a couple of months now. Do 6011's need baking prior to use? Might as well give it to guys who can wield it. I'll leave a kilo for my own but that still leaves 4 kilos to part away... will bring it on the "online long version" e.b.

Some

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

@Owyn

I have some 7018 rods that won't even strike an arc with my AC Welder. That said these were the ones I brought when I went out to test available DC Welders in the market. I was surprised how easily and good the rods were when used on an DC welder. Maybe those 6011 will perform better with DC. I have some 6011 too and have a hard time using these with my current welder.
