Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

Here are some good quality stones. Japanese Mitsu. Rated up to 24,000 rpm.

The rectangular stone is very very hard. It is used to dress up / flatten the stones including those of the bench grinders.

aaah so that's what a redressing stone is for... thanks.

Safety first - always wear face/eye/ear/hand protection as a minimum.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

Good day to all.

Pardon for the ignorance, but is there a grinder disc that you could attach to a drill?

I'm helping my son with his school project, and the only tool I have is an electric drill.

@bogart

I believe rotary tool bits are what you are looking for. Something like this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/249-piece-rotary-tool-accessory-set-93243.html

Individual bits should be available at Wilcon, ACE hardware, True Value, DoItBest, etc. Consider also buying the rotary tool itself. Electric drill might be too bulky and too powerful for your application.

And welcome to PHM!

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

I got chance to try the Tyrolit disc today and compared it with the others I had.

Looks much harder so should last a while.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

It's much thicker than the Bosch and Dewalt.

However it vibrates much more than the others specially when it hits the metal. Myself I'll stick with the Bosch discs for now. Cheaper too.

Anybody knows where some Norton discs are sold locally?

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

JayL, what do you think now of the Tyrolit brand of grinding disc, is it really that superb or is it just overrated? We should really try almost all brand of grinding discs to find out what suits as best for our DIY use. I wonder why this Tyrolit brand is so expensive, hindi ba sya nauubus agad?
Ganun ba katigas ang grinding disc nila?

Well I have not tried using that brand yet, though I have one of their cutting disc, but from the posted pics you have shown parang gastado na ang grinding edge nya, I just don't know how long have you been using that grinding consumable in a single project.

Anyway may I suggest try using also the Daiken brand of grinding disc for metal, their grinding disc is also very hard and its cheaper than the Tyrolit. Its also Japan made and I'm sure you've come across this or have seen this kind of grinding disc. Why do I say this? because this is what I'm using now on my 7" large angle grinder, I've been working on my 1/2" thick armor metal plates for the past 2 or 3 months now, using it daily, continously grinding the irregular edges, squaring off the corners and grinding the rusted surface top and the underside.

Ang gulat ko nga, para syang hindi nababawaswan at malakas kumain ng bakal, Its only now that its showing signs of grinding wear on the edges. The armor plates that I'm working on is for my metal welding table, grabe yuong mga plate panels, so hard and so heavy at 45kg @.

I'll try to post pics tomorrow of the Daiken grinding disc so you'll see how it looks and on the grinder.;)

Looks like the Tyrolit will last longer as it's thicker and seems harder. However it vibrates too much ( w/ the Bosch grinder ) for my liking specially when it touches the metal so I took it off. None the less I'm going to give it another go on a Dewalt grinder and see how it performs there.

I checked the disc hole and it's a tad bigger than the Bosch disc. I wonder if that's what's causing it to vibrate a bit more.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

I just don't know if its the cause of vibration sir JayL, kahit ba fully tightened na yuong flange locke, may vibration pa rin?

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

@rosy,
hehehe

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

I did not have time to check very carefully ( I reloaded a Bosch disc ) so those were initial impressions. I noticed that it jumps up a bit while grinding metal too. I will give it a try again later.

Yes the nut was tight so I'm sure it was not the cause of the vibration. Disc Centering, maybe?

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

I'll try to post pics tomorrow of the Daiken grinding disc so you'll see how it looks and on the grinder.;)

------------------------------------------

As promised, here I'll be posting pics of my grinding discs consumables from 4" up to 9"

My consumables of different sizes and different brands, I like trying different brands so I'll know what not to buy next and find out what are the good ones and the not so good ones, even the discs for masonry too.

Here are the good ones too in my stock. I was not able to include a Dewalt grinder since it is still attached to the 9" angle grinder.

This is what I'm presently using now on a 7" angle grinder, working on a welding project. I like this grinding disc, the grinding edge is tough and hard, (hindi madaling maubos). On its label, it says also Japan quality.

I remember this brand when I was still a kid, we used to have an auto supply and spare parts, our store carry this brand also and customers would look for this brand aside from German or US made brand spare parts.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

On these two pics I examined and checked the thickness of the grinding discs with my standard caliper and each measured almost the same or very much identical numbers except the one I have for masonry, it measures 6.5mm in thickness. How I wish I had ossie's or JayL's digital calipers so its easier to differentiate or identify each disc's thickness.

My point here I guess is that its not the thickness of the grinding disc that will make it last but maybe the hardness of the grinding disc like what I have experience with the Daiken brand, but then you may correct me if I'm wrong. 😉

-----------------------------------
The discs piled up here are from 9" , 7" , 5" , 4 1/2" , and 4" in diameter grinders and with thickness of 5.5mm.

Re: All About Metal Working Consumables

The DAIKEN brand 7" grinding disc is what I am using now on my current project.

That's me working on the project, grinding off the sides of the armor metal plate panel.

A more closer look on what I'm doing, grinding and squaring off edges and corners
