hi,

for the past years of diy'ing, i've never owned a vise and was able to go about every chore without one....

but now, i guess i need to have one. most of the things that i do involve automotive work and a few "daddy repair" tasks.

- which size is the most useful?... what i mean is more generic for the purpose mentioned above?
- does brand still matter here?
- china, local, or any other make?

i'm looking at this actually... i've talked to the seller and local - made in bulacan... according to him, better than china ones...

Re: bench vise inquiry

visit Panda Industrial sales in araneta or binondo, they still have a 3" or 4" record metal vise england made that sells for a tad less than 1K, I would recommend this over the cheap ones, but for light duties, the chinese ones will do fine... imho...

Re: bench vise inquiry

thanks for the response. hope they still have this one... i'll take a look at the araneta branch. i hope they are open tomorrow even though its a non-working holiday.

in line with this, can you share pictures or even designs of tables for vise? based on the work that i do, i'm going to need a sturdy one, preferably bolted on the floor and wall...

3" or 4" Record for 1K is an excellent price. I might pick up one if they still have it.

Bench Vises are really very useful tools.

If it's not more than 4" then a stand like this will be ok. I have one in the shop mounted this way but I just don't have a pic now.

Re: bench vise inquiry

Timber isn't referring to a vise like the one in JayL's picture, is he? How much did your vise in the picture cost, JayL?

no louis, but it is very much the same except for the swivel base... my metal working vise is removable, Hence, I can position it any angle I want and saves me the cost of the swivel type...

Re: bench vise inquiry

The Record Vise in the pic has 5" jaw length. It's a quick release model.

IIRC I got it for 3.9K.

Timb I remember you have a pic of the vise posted on the other site when you got it. Do you still have these?

What's the jaw length and how much was it? I might pick up a similar one to keep for a welding table build later..

Re: bench vise inquiry

That's a VERY GOOD price then. Now I just have to figure out when I can go there.

Re: bench vise inquiry

Hurry up. English made Record vises are drying up now. Soon it will all be the China made Records if not the Indian made ones.

The Wilton Mechanic's Vise posted is also good but Made in China. It has 6 1/2" jaw length and sells for 4,300 pesos. I checked US Made Wilton Vises but price is not really within the range I wanted to spend or afford. A same size US built Wilton Tradesman can cost a bit less than $400 excluding shipping charges.

LYS Hardware in Recto has some US Made steel vises too but I didn't look close enough because I already purchased the Record.

Re: bench vise inquiry

with a vise mounted this way, won't it topple down while using the hacksaw? or when use to hold things for prying?

i would like to go this route of mounting (budget build muna, then later on with the workbench).

the intended height of the stand would be 3ft which is roughly along my waistline.

Re: bench vise inquiry

The one at the shop seems sturdy enough ( w/ the blue Record 4 1/2" vise ). However a 17" rim was used as base.

The bench grinder on the picture has 14" rim.

Re: bench vise inquiry

i already got my england made record vise this afternoon... its the 1k worth of 4" non-swivel vise w/ anvil. i was able to do the task w/o mounting it on any stand. it'll be my next project... a workbench 😀

you are right, most of the record vises there are being "china made" only a few models are left that are euro made. i really wanted the quick release, swivel with anvil and pipe holder, but don't have the budget for now pa... maybe next time 😛

Re: bench vise inquiry

Do you have some pics? I hope there are still some stocks remaining. I'm thinking to get one for a future workbench build and a swivel is not necessary. Price is very tempting.
