Re: bench vise inquiry
Sorry I forgot to re size the borrowed picture in previous post so I lost the edit button.
To edit when the Edit button is not visible, use the URL
www.pinoyhandyman.com/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=[COLOR="Red"]4992
In above example URL, 4992 is the ID number of the post that you wanted to edit. In general, you will have to find this number by trial and error. A good number to use as starting point is the ID number of the immediately preceding post. Then work your way up. To know the ID number of a post, mouse over its Edit or Quote button to see the URL that would be accessed if the button were clicked.

Thanks for the tip. Got the over sized pic removed now and replaced.

Re: bench vise inquiry
hi,
here my first ever vise in my 27 years of living 😛
at ~ 1k for a euro made vise even though its non-swivel and does not have pipe clamp and not quick release, i guess ok narin sya. the jaws are 4" and has an anvil.
as you can see, no workbench yet.... just the garage floor...
i really liked the euro record 4.5" swivel, quick release, w/ pipe clamp, w/ anvil but its too high for my current budget. but for its price, its really good considering its origin and functions. later on, i'll be getting one like this. 😀
the rest are china record and irwin.
isn't there are swivel adapters for vises?
Re: bench vise inquiry
If you have enough workspace clearance I don't think that the swivel will really be that useful.
The quick release feature I find to be maximized only on a production type environment where time is a major factor.
The pipe clamping capability is very useful.

Re: bench vise inquiry
yup, i've thought of the same trade offs.
as far as work area, i don't have lots of it, but for the amount of tinkering that i do its enough.
our covered garage area can accomodate a 4 door sedan plus room to spare for 3 ft of work area. one person can pass by both sides of the car (not sideways).
currently, i'm thinking of having a custom made corner workbench (bolted to the ground and wall). 4ft x 3ft and 30in high (based on my height so the anvil is just perpendicular when my elbows are at 90 degrees).
i might go for pure wood for the workbench.
Re: bench vise inquiry
How heavy is that 4" vise? Would it be easy to carry if i don't bring a car?

Try to look at the folding tables in this thread below. It's what I'm building right now borrowing some ideas from him.

Re: bench vise inquiry
yup, since the day i bought the vise, i kept on reading and reading his thread... how i wish i had that luxurious space for a garage. i bet its gonna be a playground for me. =D
it seems that the folding tables are good idea, but i don't think they will suffice for a vise even this small breed.
maybe a free standing one with an extension on one side that can be lifted - and inside that lifted extension are additional storage for tools that can be hung... a peg board maybe... i'm still building it in my mind
i can't tell its weight nor do i have a scale to tell you exactly how heavy it is. it depends on where you live, your manner of commuting, and how strong you are. 😛 i still suggest bringing a car if you plan to purchase this. in spite of it being only 4" w/o swivel, it still is heavy. you can carry it with one hand, but you can't do it for a long time. in addition, our weather these days are hell.
btw, their vises don't come with boxes so you'll be carrying it the way you see it in my pic above 😛

I guess i'll need to wait for when my family goes to divisoria with the car. I just hope they don't run out of those made in england vises when i do get to go.:(

they have a branch in araneta ave so you don't have to go to binondo area. as far as stocks are concerned, i just don't know if both branches have the same items on stock. i got mine from araneta branch.

have you tried purchasing in harbor freight?
Re: bench vise inquiry
Yes but for small (in size and price) items only so far. They have retail stores all over US. It is like Divisoria/Binondo for tools. Some people love it, some hate it.
